COULD the letter D= DISC, for DISC BRAKE FRONT END , the production line would have the compliance plate riveted on the firewall before it got to the front end assembly , so then they would know what front end to put on ?????? D= Disc , DRUM = PLANK space next to inset ???? INTERESTING theory. |

No, I don't think so. I've seen too many HD/HR with 'D' on the body plate on cars which only had drums all round. Note: It is a body ID plate not a compliance plate. Compliance plates didn't appear until Jan 1970. Dr Terry |

SORRY ID plate , my FACTORY HDX2s DONT have THE letter D on there ID PLATE, how do you explain this ??? |

I have no explanation for the 'D' on these plates.
Many say it relates to certain option packages, other say D for Dulux (problem there is I think Dulux was the only supplier of paint to GMH in that era).
There are many theories but nothing concrete.

Two owner vehicle, owner I bought it off had it for 2 months, previous owner since bought new. Has all the X2 goodies, dual pipes, dual carbs, gold air cleaner, gold oil cap, gold fan, vent tube, X2 dash, black choke cable, badges, X2 decals on engine etc

Hi all, Have picked up a HR prem for resto and would like to try and find out history,colour codes etc.
BODY:HR235-71209-S TRIM:1201-F61 PAINT:587-1286 INSERT:D TOP585-9562
Also it has what looks like maybe a factory 4 speed.The console is done very well and looks factory.Also the honey pot looks original with no bracket for a gear change. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like a nice rare car. The numbers decipher as:- HR235 = HR Premier sedan 71209-S = 71209th Premier sedan out of Sydney (Pagewood) plant 1201 = GM-H exterior code for a car with a Grecian White roof & Hacienda Blue Met. body F61 = Interior code for Paloma Blue (bucket seats) in a Premier sedan 587-1286 = Dulux shade number for Hacienda Blue Metallic D = ??? We would all like to know !! 585-9562 = Dulux shade number for Grecian White It is sometimes difficult to prove if an HR came from the factory with the 4-sp Opel but check to see how many unique items are present. Check for things like the original reverse light switch wiring, ammeter wiring, original seat separator lid (opens reverse to normal Premiers). You've already found the original column & honey pot, so you're most of the way there. The 1201 & F61 are late 1967 colours so that also points to it being an original 4-sp, because they were'nt made before May 67. Dr Terry |

Hi banksy, another thing you could check is the steering column where it enters the steering box, there should be no holes where the gearshift linkages would normally come out for a column change, it should be a one piece tube right through NOT just blanked off.

Wow quick response thanks. The lid opens from back, hinged toward the front. Has the smiths ammeter in place between idiot lights and speedo. I'll check for the linkage bolts,reverse switch etc. thanks again for your help

My warning lights lit up when you said 'idiot lights' & lit up even more when you said that the lid hinged towards the front. Maybe this is not an original Opel equipped car after all. Genuine Opel HRs will have the lid hinged towards the rear & if it has a 186S motor it will not have idiot lights it will have the X2/S 4-gauge set. Dr Terry |

I had always assumed that Sydney cars had the sequence number as the body number as 71209 Premier sedans from one plant seems a huge amount given 250000 odd HRs built in total. I also thought that a 4-speed could be put behind any engine including the 186S in spite of the fact that most 4-speed cars also appear to have the 186S engine. |

Yes, the 4-sp was available behind all engines, not just the 186S, but you would have thought that somebody ordering a 4-sp Premier would've also optioned the 186S engine. The centre console lid is a worry. Sydney body numbering is a little odd. My theory is that the 71209 number is the number of 235s built since HD production began. 71209 would be too low to be a sequence number for a late 1967 HR & as you say it's too high for one plant given that 250,000 odd HRs were built in total. OK looks like no cigar There is 1 linkage bracket hanging out near the steering box. Just for info the little badge on firewall S147249. The engine is a 179F number so obviously the car has been modded. thanks for the help. |

OK so the tag number is S147249 & the body number is 71209.
147249 would be the totaL of all HD & HR built at Pagewood & 71209 would be the total of HR only.

Greetings, Your input is valued as always. I'm thinking that maybe the Chassis Number may assist here in determining the number of Sydney HRs built to this point. I understand this is asking a lot for the owner to post here, but it would sure help in understanding these cars more. If it is around HR72000SS then we are getting somewhere. |

On production numbers from all the plants, the highest body numbers I have from each plant are
Bris 25000 Syd 76000 Melb 70000 Adel firewall stamp 49000
Does anyone have any higher figures?
I would suggest given the limited sample of plates I have seen that the true numbers would be slightly higher and that Syd body numbers are the total number of HR bodies. It looks as though Adel are the only factory breaking body nos. up into different models.
