BOTH my FACTORY HR 186S PREMIERS, one three speed, the other 4 speed, are not far off the mark with BODY NUMBER 71209 AND TAG NUMBER S147249, HOPE this helps.

Greetings, Going through all this again has found the answers to the questions that get asked over and over. The 'D' on some plates is to do with paint type. The Insert #s are option packs and are only on Melbourne cars.

Just picked up a HR pannel van as a restoration project but i dont know how to determine the model from the body number. I've gone through the majority of older post's but havn't seen any body numbers similar to mine, can any body help??

The body number is HR2104-5882-A

HR 2104 is a Panel Van and this one is the 5882th from the Adelaide plant.
The actual body stamp number on the firewall will show if it is a full Adelaide
completed vehicle or not.
If the Body number has 1 A or 2 A's at the end of the number it is just a Adelaide ute.
If it is A M it is Melbourne and if it is A P it is a Perth completed vehicle.
There should also be a little metal tag on the firewall as well, the A M or P names the
final completion plant.
Have you sorted the Trim and Paint details out as yet.

Cheers, the other plate has a P stamped into it so i gues it was finished in perth

The trim number is 1136-E76
and the paint is 585-8702

I hope you can use this to tell me a little more about the car

From what I have listed trim is Copra Fawn.
Unfortunately Leroy does not have pictures of this trim.
If you are interested in a rough build date on it (depending on how much has been changed over the years)
You can check a few parts on the car that are date stamped.

D....was optional x2 parts, could have been dash, headers, badged, 186s motor, whatever the customer asked for at the time. The bloke doing the stamping just wasn't a good shot.

hi every body im a new member i have hr premier 186s 4speed opel gearbox silver mink and black interior and has a front bench seat i would like to know of any others out there i saw a blue premier simler at the winter sun car show couple of years ago and thats all are a small group of owners ?

Hi All,
I know I am new here but I am about to throw a cat amongst the pigeons.
I have a HR X2 Brisbane factory. The tag is as follows:
BODY HR225-438M
TRIM 882-F59
PAINT 585-8703
INSERT
TOP 585-9562

V.I.N. HR 048XX M B
ENG. NO. 186K255XX

I have a blank coffee pot, no holes in the lower column, also my center console lifts to the rear of the car. The dash is full X2, I have twin carbs, twin headers, front and rear sway bar, 3.36 LSD, power assisted disc brake front, black grille, 4 speed gearbox, power steering (removed as it leaked i now regret it) and I can fit a 6 inch rim in my spare tyre well. The date tags on all the guages say 4/66.

The old bloke I bought it off 24 years ago said that it used to be a police car and he never changed a thing, all he did was add the spats, mudflaps, over riders, and weather shield. He also said there is a hole in the front of the roof where he believed the police light was (I now have a radio aerial there).

Everyone I have spoken to said that my HR is a 1966 model but could not possibly have the 4 speed in it.

Can anyone shed light on this?

It's highly unlikely it left the factory as an X2 4-sp, especially being such an early build (66!). Also note that HR Specials didn't get a centre console. To have a centre console it must also have front bucket seats, again not available on a Special. There are always exceptions of course, it could be a special build, but it is very unusual.

It's more likely it was converted using bits out of a wreck & new parts. This stuff was quite plentiful in the early 70s. I've got a blank steering column in my HD Premier (now T-bar auto).

The only 'mystery' that I can see is the interior trim number, are you sure it reads F59, or is it E59. I have no listing for F59 in any Holden.

Rear sway bar & black grille are not factory either.

I was told by the old bloke I got it off that it was not changed in any way, he said he bought it at a police auction in 1968. He also told me that the front seats didn't looked like they matched the rest of the car. From what i have been told the F stands for bucket seats 59 is for Copra Fawn (I think that was the colour). Nothing on this car is normal for a HR. I have been told that many different things.

Also the D marked on the plate I know a bloke that explained it to me.

The plates marked with just a D from all plants. This is a code for the dealers to check an improved paint applied to certain cars, so they could check how the paint held up in certain conditions. These were checked every time the car was serviced. Apparently.

Sounds like a cool car. Is there no code on the INSERT line on the BODY tag? It should have one being what looks to be a Melbourne bodied car. By the numbers on it it should have been hard trimmed and painted at Dandenong and BODY plate and chassis numbers gone on at Dandenong.

I left the INSERT line blank but I have a totally different number to anything else that has been put up. I am in contact with a guy that is deciphering the codes with help from someone at GMH in 1960 - 1975. He was in charge of stamping them on the plates, when I contacted him about my number he nearly fell of his chair because it throws his whole theory out the window.

We've been working on a list too, and you are right there have been a few theories that a code turns up and squashed it! I think the current list I have has about 25 on it. Warren was doing it a while back, Leroy Jones was as well. We should probably all get together and at least confirm what we have aligns!

This car sounds very interesting, it would be great to see a pic of the front seats & console. The console trim must look similar to an HD Premier. The HR style with the fake timber would look out of place in a Special. Are the seats trimmed in Sadlon material (Special style) or Morrikide with buttons (Premier style) ?

As I said, the closest trim number I could find was E59 which is Copra & Valsand Fawn in sadlon vinyl in a Special.

F doesn't refer to bucket seats. It was used as the prefix for the updated trim numbers when the Premier front bench seat was introduced in 1967. The 66 HR Premier (bucket seated) trim numbers ran from E65 to E72 for the 4 colours in sedan & wagon versions.

Here is what we have on the codes so far,

The 3 digit code is stamped on Melbourne cars as that was where the dealers Phoned the request through for a customer. this was stamped on the plate to specify that it was a special order, then the production line knew what parts to fit to the car.

Codes are:

0XX - 161 High compression
1XX - 186
2XX - 186X2
3XX - 186S
4XX - 161 Low Compression

The next two numbers are from 10 - 40

X2X - 2 Speed Powerglide
X1X, X4X, X6X - 3 speed manual
X7X, X8X - 4 speed Opal

now these numbers are in a series as in X21 - Auto with disc brakes X22 - Auto with tow option (3.55 diff, disc brakes, heavy duty rear springs)

These numbers are not all the same but the most common ones are

XX0 - Heater/ demister option
XX1 - towing option
XX2 - Disc brakes with power assist
XX3 - LSD and Power discs
XX4 - 6 inch wheels (not verified)
XX6 - all options (Power discs, lsd, hd springs, heater/demister, wiper/washers, seat belts etc)
XX7 - refers to chrome strips or metallic paint.
There is also one for seatbelts and laminated windscreen.
Remember these codes were from the dealer to the Melbourne office and until we can get every HR owner with a code to say what setup they have it will never get sorted.

The best way to figure it out is what ever car has the code on it maybe they should say what option they have. remember HR215 is the base model.
So if you have say a HR225A with option 122 you could say you have a 186, powerglide disc brake front, I have a HR255 with 276 on it is a 186 X2 with a 4 speed and all options. That way we can start to get some numbers sorted.

The D on the plates lets the dealers to check the condition of the paint as it was a new or different formula that was used. Also the windows have a year code on them as well, the word Armourlite has ten letters if you look close there is a dot above one of the letters this is the year that glass was made. if you have a HR it is between 1966 and 1968 mine has the dot over the top of the R, mine is a 66 model. this is standard for all Armourlite glass.

I hope we can get this all figured with these codes.

Byron, you suggested that it may not have the code on the insert line as final assembly was in Brisbane, however if painted and trimmed then the trans would be known due to column fitment and the engine known for badge drilling. As now shown there is a code on the insert line of this car.

Thanks Warren, Yours has 286 on it, does it have a heater/ demister, washers, heavy duty springs (5 or 6 leaves) and power assisted brakes, is it a 3 or 4 speed?
So far I have concluded that a few HR X2s have the 286 code on them but not all. I also have figured that the 4 speeds never had a M or A after the model number (HR225, HR235)

I do not have this car, all these details are from an owner manual. So I cannot confirm M on Body Id Plate either.
