Options
X2, Manual, Disc brake, LSD, Vinyl roof.
Once 186S comes out have 4 digit codes for these cars.
Byron, you suggested that it may not have the code on the insert line as final assembly was in Brisbane, however if painted and trimmed then the trans would be known due to column fitment and the engine known for badge drilling. As now shown there is a code on the insert line of this car.

Warren, I meant the MR after HR225. If it isn't there it probably means the QLD plant didn't know if it was going to be auto or manual? Which would mean they put the INSERT code on? |

Here is what we have on the codes so far,
The 3 digit code is stamped on Melbourne cars as that was where the dealers Phoned the request through for a customer. this was stamped on the plate to specify that it was a special order, then the production line knew what parts to fit to the car.
Codes are:
0XX - 161 High compression 1XX - 186 2XX - 186X2 3XX - 186S 4XX - 161 Low Compression
The next two numbers are from 10 - 40
X2X - 2 Speed Powerglide X1X, X4X, X6X - 3 speed manual X7X, X8X - 4 speed Opal
now these numbers are in a series as in X21 - Auto with disc brakes X22 - Auto with tow option (3.55 diff, disc brakes, heavy duty rear springs)
These numbers are not all the same but the most common ones are
XX0 - Heater/ demister option XX1 - towing option XX2 - Disc brakes with power assist XX3 - LSD and Power discs XX4 - 6 inch wheels (not verified) XX6 - all options (Power discs, lsd, hd springs, heater/demister, wiper/washers, seat belts etc) XX7 - refers to chrome strips or metallic paint. There is also one for seatbelts and laminated windscreen. Remember these codes were from the dealer to the Melbourne office and until we can get every HR owner with a code to say what setup they have it will never get sorted.
The best way to figure it out is what ever car has the code on it maybe they should say what option they have. remember HR215 is the base model. So if you have say a HR225A with option 122 you could say you have a 186, powerglide disc brake front, I have a HR255 with 276 on it is a 186 X2 with a 4 speed and all options. That way we can start to get some numbers sorted.
The D on the plates lets the dealers to check the condition of the paint as it was a new or different formula that was used. Also the windows have a year code on them as well, the word Armourlite has ten letters if you look close there is a dot above one of the letters this is the year that glass was made. if you have a HR it is between 1966 and 1968 mine has the dot over the top of the R, mine is a 66 model. this is standard for all Armourlite glass.
I hope we can get this all figured with these codes.
Cheers DJ
Oh Almost forgot a pic of my interior, not original but reproduced exactly (unfortunately).
Wow, this is starting to look very promising! One thing I noticed is from what we've found the 3xx isn't right for 186S, these appear to run a 4 digit code starting with 1. Example, 2 x identical auto HR Premiers except one is an X2 and the other a 186S have been 242 and 1242 respectively, so I think the 186S uses the same codes as X2 just adds a 1 in front, unless it is a 4spd then they have a 7 as the second digit....I'll see how this all fits with the cars we have! |

I am thinking the 186S had a different code as Yes it does have 4 numbers with the second one being a 7 for a 4 speed I haven't seen too many 186S cars to verify that the 3rd number is an auto or manual number. At least we can get more numbers together and figure it all out.

I'll PM you once we have digested what you have. One other thing I noticed is the 6" rim bit. No-one in Australia made a 6" rim hoop prior to HK GTS327 being made, there wan't even tyres for them. So it is unlikely one of the codes in HR is for 6" rims. The wider spare wheel spot in your car may be a hint as to its past though. One of the biggest pains is HD and HR share codes but they mean different things! |

Byron,
The MR after the model number would be placed on there by the body plant, in this case Melbourne. Now if melbourne was to transport to Brisbane for final assembly then they put the plate on the car.
Only Melbourne stamped the driveline code, even though the code appears in owner's manuals of cars sold in Brisbane, even if they are not Melbourne built cars. This suggests to me that these codes were Australia wide, but once again only melbourne put the code on the tag.
Ben is also of the belif that the power steer cars got a different code.

It is a body tag Warren, hence Dandenong had to put it on didn't it? It may be a big co-incidence that this Valley plant assembled HR doesn't have the MR on its Dandenong tag model line. But it does seem silly that it has an insert line code so the body plant had to know it was a manual RHD. It'd be interesting to see what valley plant assembled Elizabeth or Pagewood bodies have. |

Seems like we are getting somewhere. The power steering option is there but I have only seen 3 with the PS but no number on the insert line, so I can't match this up to any number. Also as I said the numbers may not be the same for each lot of tens as in X26 - Auto all options to X46 manual towing options. That is why I would like to know what option is associated with what number. |

Hi Paul, awesome work you are doing here, as well as all the others who have contributed. I have a HD239A Melbourne Tag that has 253 as the insert so it looks like you're onto something. The car also had a factory electric tailgate which I thought it may have meant but alas no. I can send an image to anyone that's interested. Any other progress on this stuff people? Thanks Edited by user Saturday, 28 September 2013 5:45:33 AM(UTC)

182 is new to me. Should be a straight 186, but what mechanical options are on it? Was it a 4spd, discs, LSD etc? |

Just from what I have see diff 3:55 single spinner and it had a disc front but it was sold before I had a chance to buy it when I sore the car and brought it myself only two rods are visible on the steering column so assuming three speed looks like white perforated roof lining black dash pad no gauges Crome strip on the bonnet and Crome down the sides and around the windows and no seats that's all I can think of at the moment untill daylight as to dark to see anything else |

They would have marked the lefts also.
Most were Manuals to, so you get, in order of popualrity, 225MR, 225AR, 225ML and 225AL.
As you are in Aus, then you only see the first two.

ok that would make sense, but why do some HD-HR not have the L or R?
or is this a thing only the Melbourne plant would do?

Yes its a plant thing.
The R appears on Melbourne HR and Sydney HK to VB.
The M and A thing goes back to EK in Melbourne, then all plants in EJ. Then at the end of HR all plants dropped it, except Brisbane, which dropped it in HQ, late 72.
