As with any service provider, be crystal clear about the standard of quality you are after. Some platers will only do a "show quality" job if asked.

Thats my 20c worth

DreaminHR is right on about the pricing at Preston, out of the question. I know you only get what you pay for but they are way over the top. AL.

Yep, you MUST STRESS the level of finish required. Any plating is only as good as the repairs, prep & polish work done by the monkeys. Same as paintwork really. Some businesses hire better trained monkeys than others & give them the high quality bananas. More work, more time, more cost. There is no such thing as cheap chroming, quality will cost plenty, but you will be happy for a lot longer.
I have had good quality work from Vinnies in Dandenong. Have a look at any finished work at the business you go to before committing. Especially look in between narrow grooves for their attention to detail, & ripples on flat areas. Refuse your items back until completely satisfied. If they dont have old car or bike components there, they are probably not for you. RL is right. 20c well spent.

Hi, I recently had the scuff plates on my coupe done by a local plater here in Queensland. $600 later and they are very nice. The place I used is apparently the only one up here permitted to do the correct plating - copper, nickel, chrome. There are serious issues with the copper side of the operation from what I am told. Virtually all chrome these days is just nickel under the chrome and by doing this it is impossible to achieve the correct quality and finish.

Hi,

The name of the plating place I used is Pine Rivers Electroplating at 23 Paisley Drive Lawnton. Phone 3881 2018. Debbie was the person I dealt with. They are also known as the diecast wizards according to a business card I got at a swap meet. Excellent work from all accounts. That price for a bumper bar sounds right.

the preparation for chroming is even more critical than for a quality paint job. the metal must be absolutely perfect and clean etc. to do it properly it need to be copper plate, which prevents rust and provides a good base for finish, like etch primer in painting, then it needs to be nickel plated which seals it all off and finsihes the copper, like undercoating, then chrome plated.
all $$$$$$$$!!!
chrome on its on its porous and will allow the metal underneath to rust eventually.
a lot of the really old 1920s cars were copper and nickeled, the nickel gives a slightly bluish appearance which i quite like in some areas but chrome finishes it,
too much chrome is never enough.

DreaminHR,
I believe the guy above would be Geoff Field (OLDEN 1) from Cockatoo on 5968-8905 . He is good but can be slow.

p.s. how the van coming along ? HD HR Nats in Canberra in June and back in Vic in 2010

Hi,

I learnt my lessen a few years ago when I needed my front bar re chromed on my falcon. Got a few prices and silly me went with the cheapest place.
I got my bar back but was never happy with the quality of the chrome.
About a year later I had my Rear bar plated at a different shop called Chrome world in Canberra,
I told them about the front bar I had chromed and was not happy with the job, They then asked me what sort of quality I was after, They said there is different types of finishes, They said that not everyone wants or needs to spend a lot of money on a bar that is just going to be put on a old banged up car.

But then there a people that would like the best finish they can get for there show car.
They said it all comes down to how much time you want them to spend working on your bar because they have to charge for the time they spend preparing your bar for plating.
Give them a call if you need any plating done there website is www.chromeworld.net.au.

Hi,probrably not relivantbut you can only crome something 3times.Aparently there is a build up of hydrogen in the base metal which will f up the crome.

Hi Shane

Try Simon Pinnega from HKTG Parts Recovery.

[email protected] or 0409 691 119.

Hes in SA and hes a really knowledgable guy with lots of contacts.

Goes by *69cult* on eBay, Oldholden and Facebook.

He can restore any thing on these cars.

He sent me these photos of a dash he restored.

Not sure what it would be worth (probably not cheap) but I trust him to do a good job - hes passionate about his work.

Hes helped me heaps.

Cheers

Jeremy
