Thanks for your input Guys.
Warren, I agree with your thoughts. Isnt it strange when you question someones beliefs they get shirty!
Greg, thanks for checking your car. Is it a 71 Pagewood car? As Ben stated earlier, he has seen a very early Pagewood car which doest have one either. What month is yours?
Dave, great pio, that is one mint boot floor. Wish mine looked like that!

gday andy, yes its a lovely looking boot, but not mine, pic was posted on oldholden here http://oldholden.com/node/81790#comment-386235

the hole must not have been to usefull, cause it got deleted! it would have taken a fair amount of work to modify the die, unless it was put in by hand?

Yes I found a long time ago, put up every possible answer, even if they are wrong, then sort through and prove things wrong or right.

If you cannot 100% prove something then wait for the right answer, it will eventually come.

Lots of the time you find you are wrong, boy were Ben and I wrong about lots of things before the Monaro Facts/Story.

Gday Dave, yeah it must have had a certain use, although limited. It does provide easy-ish access to the diff upper control arm bolts, but they are much easier to get to from underneath, which is how diffs are generally fitted. The hole is actually off-centre, slightly to the LHS. If it was for the diff arms then it would be central. It is cut out by oxy torch, which indicates it was done off line. WB Statesman doors received a similar treatment for the speaker holes, and this was performed off line too.

the best idea i could get for a production date on the export staesman was 8/71 off the gearbox tag...it was an early car because it had no dash pad metal strip....i cannot remember wether it was ever established where it was built...byron may know 100pc.....

What about the fitting of brake lines into the t--fitting on top of the diff ? were the diffs installed with lines already fitted ? Maybe early HQs were fitted this way ? When you look thur the hole ( in a S/W ) that fitting is right there .Mark.

I think all the ideas are plausable ,but my vote is a production line quick fix on cars about to go out the door ,hence the rough cut(not stamping appearance,(only on sydney cars?)just my thoughts.

the hole is for when you would sneak ya mates into the drive-ins, just in case there was a line out the front and the wait was long, your mates could undo that panel, get some fresh air, have a pee or throw thier emptys out..also easier for them to make a runner if the gate attendant wanted to check the boot for entry fee evaders..

One thing I have noticed with Gregs tags, and I dont know if its really all that relevant, but the numbers are a stamped indentation and not a raised number impression like the rest of the tag.

This is my body plate for example

still got the grille and its still slightly melted...as for the rest of the car...firewall and chambers now reside in a hq coupe....left quarter panel and half rear beaver is in western australia attached to another hq statesman and left side of roof and gutter are in sydney somewhere to repair a hj statesman...so yes ive sold parts of it..
