BCB where are you going? Just buy one how much can they cost? Making your own gasket is when you are stuck the other side of the black stump and there is no other alternative.

but a new gasket costs 80 smakaroonies,, where as make my own is 5 smakers,, so as i am sure it is a leaking base gasket, just wanted to do this bit by bit,,
other wise it might end up having to have a full rebuild?
so was jest making sure it is okie dokie to use oil paper, an whether i should do anything else?
cheers

Make sure you use a "Kellogs" cornflake box and buy yourself a decent sharp knife!

Have you worked out how to use that multimeter yet.

I agree that its handy stuff for those odd times when its needed, but gaskets are cheap and readily available, so 99% of the time i just have new stuff ready for the job im about to tackle.

If youre set on making gaskets, just use a good knife and be careful. Pay attention to the thickness of the gasket you took off as well.

yeah itll be fine

if you dont have hole punches for bolt holes use an old socket + hammer, and if the socket is stuffed anyway grind a bit of an edge on it.

get a roll of gasket paper

cocpops boxes are for when you are stranded

the shiny side doesnt seal as good as gasket paper

well..!! hooley dooley,,
wait for this>>
took carbee off said veehikle,,found it had a ruelly thick, rubbery/plasticey,,bottom gasket..
found a small part of it had seperated, basically only a thin outer coating of itself and only between the 2 banks of holes, none too outside of carbee,,,, but no tears nor breaks in it anywhere.
decided to marry the new thin gasket, and sand wich the 2 together,
did this!! and WHOA!!! was missing and carrying on, and definately starved of fuel,
so i then took the new gasket off, and put it all back in with old gasket,, which is about 64/256th,s thick!
found engine not running very well still,
and then i noticed a pipe coming from the top back rim of carbee, going no where??
so i simply put a small amount of grease in end of pipe, and motor then was back the way it was before!!!! running i think rich??
does anybody know what this pipe coming from the back of carbee is for, and where it is meant to run too??
the only place i can see is a plate bolted into manifold next to base of carbee?
your help is thanked graciously, already,, [eddy]
cheers

goes to the charcoal can

sounds like your carb needs a proper rebuild

like that charcoal can vent has valves that tell the carb to vent to the can or the intake air and this will affect your vacuum signals

to tell if a carb is running rich or lean place your hand next to the air intake and slowly cover it up

if speed picks up its lean. if it drops its rich

but either way you need to rebuild at least the top part and then go from there

hey bosko,
what charcoal can?? there is no charcoal can,? i presume you mean the round plastic canisters, that i used to have on another car?
this is a 308 in a 1998 ford transit, it will be going straight gas, so dosent matter re having a puefect carb,, but i do have to get it to the gas fitterer, that will mean a few k,s driving,, and was trying to get it running reasonably good untill then.
a mate pulled her apart, and he is an excellent mechanic, and he said the carb was ridgy didge.
so i think i have stuffed the base gasket up when i had to take it off, and this was causing the prob,
the choke has been tied off, and i am sure this little pipe was going into the top of the manifold?
anyways i will try checking tomorrow, see if it is actually is running rich,
thanks for thine input.
cheers

80 Smackers for a 4BBL base gasket? I think not thats about right for a small parts kit.

but if you are going to make one your self with gasket paper, being gentel with a small ball pein hammer and tapping on the sharp edges and it will come up perfectly

and put her on,, there is a slight difference,, hard to pin point it.. certainly running, i think slightly leaner,,was certainly harder to start,
needs a guru to have a squiz,,
next week,
thanks to all ewes support, and will let ya all know how it all ends up.
