Hope not a silly question but dont know what it is. Was it found on special models.Sounds like it might be desirable for keeping cars original or was it better than a cable.

Rat trap is the nickname given to the type of mechanical clutch linkage seen on HK to HZ Holdens & LC to UC Toranas before the Commodore (full cable set-up) was introduced. There are several types. V8 Toranas & Holdens HX onwards had a system utilising a cable & a small bell-crank linkage at the bell-housing.

im pretty sure the clutch in my HX is a rat trap and i advise you not to get one, its ridiculously stiff. you get in another car and put your foot through the floor once youre used to the rat trap

top one is 6 cyl, bottom is V8, you can modify the 6 cyl easily to be a V8, all you need to do is cut off the tag on the side and drill a hole where the white dot is drawn

the V8 bracket is made of thicker steel and is a little wider, but i modified a 6 cyl one years ago and im still using it today

cheers dave

If you guys call the Holden clutch set-up a rat trap, then what would you call the nightmare system used in a HQ 350 4-speed? After many years of sourcing parts and from assistance from the guru in Sydney, I now have a fully functioning and totally correct looking set-up. Whoever designed the thing was either very clever or trying to cure an impossible situation in a very complex manner. The company would have lots lots of money on this aspect of the HQ series. Maybe thats why they needed to churn out nearly half a million of the cars to recoup the cost blowout of the Muncie clutch system? This part of any Monaro would hold the record for the most unique parts I would imagine.

That setup is commonly known as a "flea circus". Lots of moving parts leaving you wondering whats operating which!

I reckon the HX and HZ 1/2 cable and half rat-trap is heaps uglier than the HQ-HJ setup.
