Does anyone know what size bores a 179HP would have had from standard?? Also what would a block with all its bits n pieces + spares be worth? Cheers Stephen Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint. [email protected]http://gallery.oldholden.com/69HT_MUNRO/ |

The standard bore size for a 179 Holden 6 is 3 9/16" or 3.5625".
The HP is meaningless, they have the same size bore dimension, with or without the HP.

Yes, all EH 179 blocks to late 1964 had HP cast into the side, but they were no different in any other way to those cast 179. Dr Terry |

a good way to tell if its std bore or close to it, at swap meets and random finds is the colour of the rod and main bearings, the original ones were a copper colour. Handy when its a basketcase motor..which it sounds like it is..

Im fairly certain that HP blocks were used in Premiers as they were mainly automatics whilst the other 179s were in the specials etc
and just confirming the details, bore 3.563in, stroke 3.00in, output 115bhp @ 4000rpm and torque 175ft/lbs @ 1600rpm

not quite, the EH ran the HP, in all Hydromatic cars and some manual ones too. yes, all premiers were 179 HP standard, and 95% autos. i have only seen several 235M and 239M bodied cars, so manual premiers were rare. The HP was an option for the EH, and often seen in specials, auto or manual, however the "HP" is rare in base models sedan ute van. most of these were 149.
not sure of the exact changeover, but the HD ran the 179, not HP

They changed from the HP to the 179 casting number around October 1964. So this would be the last 3 months production & also 65 EH utes & vans used the same block as the HD 179. Dr Terry |

Early EHs did not have the option of a 179 on manual cars. The S4 was the start of the 179 manuals. http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

To clarify several things. 1. The EH S4 was the first EH with a manual 179 but, these were a small run of Specials built in Sept 1963. 2. The first run of normal EH manual 179s werent built until around Feb 1964. After this date they were commonly available. 3. All EH 179 blocks, including those fitted to utes & van up to June 1965 had an M stamped engine number prefix. This is regardless of whether they had a 179 or HP cast on the side of the block. 4. The only engines with a 179 stamped engine number prefix were the HD 179 & X2 engines. These had the prefixes 179F & 179X respectively.

No, that is about the only variant that wasnt made. Prior to Feb 64, if you wanted a Premier you got Hydra-Matic or nothing. All EH Premiers had the 179. Dr Terry |

Yes, i always thought the EH prem was 179 only. In the sales brochures, it says the 179 is standard equipment for EH Premiers. was never 100% sure, thanks
