Was told the other day that the vt heads have a different chamber shape to the previous models. Does any one know if this is true, and if so was that the only difference between them?

Sure theyre not just confusing the fact that VT series two changed motors to the LS Chev series? Or were they referring specifically to the last of the Holden heads? |

They said the last of the 5 litres. The vt roller motors.

Never heard that before, but may be true. The last of the 5.0L was in VSIII too not VT.

The first VTs came out with 5 liters. the 185, 195s

That is correct, and 5.7 also with HSVs. But VSIII were still on sale into VX, and werent replaced with VU until sometime into VX. They were still on sale into 2001 but as run out. V8s were all gone by September 2000 though.

The 179 KW and 195 KW VT roller cam motor cyl head have 312 casting number and the ute has 019. and yes it is a smaller chamber. the 1998 VS series III ute had a 168 KW motor and in 1999 they got the 179 KW roller cam motor. optional 195 KW in early 1999 on the S ute.

This is a bit ambiguous. Which one is smaller, the VT (roller cam) motor or the VN-VS motor. Also why is it just the ute & not the Statemans or Caprices. What is the full casting number of the VT head, that ends in 312 ? Dr Terry |

I thought that was od too, as I thought the VT and VSIII 179kW engines were identical.

Its not all VS III which had VT V8s, its only late production VS III. AFAIK they are near identical also, the only differences are the belt & pulley set-up & perhaps the sump. Dr Terry |

correct the VT has kind of a love heart shaped chamber and the others dont. I dont have numbers on hand at the moment - i will try and find some hard evidence later.

The cc difference is minimal. 63/64cc for VN-VS. Heart shape VT 60/61cc. Someone maybe able to be more accurate than that- but its not a huge difference either way.

I think it may to do with the emission laws. i think Jan 1999 it got stricter. yes statesman and Utes are the same. i cant remember where i got these details its what i have jotted down years ago it may be wrong. Holdens. Alan Jones said they lifted the compression from 8.4:1 to 8.8:1 reshaping the chamber around the intake valve to improve airflow,tumble & burn. to meet ADR 37/01 of the VT roller motor.

Castellan, most of those are cast dates not casting numbers. Did the VSIII 179kW/195kW engines also have to comply with that ADR? If so the heads should be the same as VT.

I think you are right, with as to some being the casting dates HK1837.
From what i remember is that on 1/1/1999 all had to comply with ADR37/01 as ADR37/01 starts on 1/1/1997 with models first produced on that date or after that date. with all new vehicles required to comply by 1/1/99. so i think the VT does comply with it but only the ute & statesman had to in 1999 so that is why it got the roller sequential motor.
The 195 KW motor has a different exhaust valve. so it may have a different number.
