Hi there
I need to paint the steering column shrouds on my HG.
Theyre obviously plastic and have been sprayed at the factory and then again by persons unknown.
I have been given the right colour for the shrouds.
I can have some automotive paint mixed locally in a pressure can and I'm keen to have a crack.
The paint's obviously exterior paint (acrylic I think) but would this work, and what prep would I need to do?
Would it need a coat of clear??
Also, I assume the metal part of the column remains in satin black??

Would you bother priming, prepping and painting? When i got a blank column shroud for mine (column shift changed to floor shift) i just gave it a lick of spray paint on a warm, sunny day. Id say the mixed paint in a pressure can would be the go. Maybe some pressure can primer, a light sand with fine paper, then the paint, if you want to be thorough. Ive just done mine, I sanded all the paint off then acrylic primer (if you want a better surface use spray putty one step primer) acrylic satin mist silver(met)then two coats of acrylic clear,longish process looks really good(street not show)cheers...jim ..p.s also VERY important ...hang whatever your painting up to paint it all around in one go and it reduces dust/dirt flys and DOGS!. Jim - was it all std external paint supplies??
Did you do any plastic priming??
And did you just scuff back or remove paint completely?

Hi ,you dont need to remove ALL the paint but it is best to,primer ,silver ,clear.Thats the order ,I used a spray gun ,not cans,cans have there place but In my opinion not here.I used acrylic primer,acrylic colour and acrylic clear,All exterior car paint.When you put the clear on just put 2-3 coats on and leave it,no need to cut it back or polish it.It will look good,but remember with any defects....if you can feel it with you fingers you will see it in the finish.Any more questions just ask and Ill try to help.

Onto the next painting project.....
Only 34 million to go...
Actually I need to get this column back together and installed first.
That is after I pull the dash and fix up the wiring and get the tacho and oil guage working and then.....
So much to do, so little time.
