Hey guys,
I have a HQ GTS 350 coupe that the numbers dont seem to add up. Hope someone can help.
The Safety compliance Plate has
HQ COUPE, 6/72, CHQ40773S = Sydney BAP
The Body Identification Plate has
Model HQ81837 = HQ GTS350
Body no 004500M = Body no and Melbourne BAP
Trim 1831-18X = Etruscan Gold met. with Flax vinyl
Paint 567-13126
There is no VIN plate unfortunately.
The number stamped into the chassis near the steering box is V882237P

I have double checked all these but they don't seem correct, why the different BAP's? Can I work out the original VIN from this info?

thanks

The chassis number is a Victorian Police number, indicateing the car was stolen and recovered, so the new chassis number issued.

They may have taken the vIN plate at that time.

No there is no way to work out the VIN from what you have given, however, Ben Stewart might be able to work it out for you, especially if you have the original engine still.

Does the firewall of the coupe have a number on it? Adjacent to the heater box, closer to the middle?
Have a look and see if it does. Ill pass on the info to Ben for you.

Warren, the original engine was blown up apparently according to previous owner and replaced with another 350, this was over in Perth somewhere, car came from WA to NT to QLD with last owner who was in the Army. It was registered in WA when I bought it, didnt get any rego papers with it.

Checked the firewall out, unfortunately no numbers on there at all.
Any other ideas or info??

Not having a number on the firewall means the body probably matches the BODY tag, and the ADR plate is most likely from another car. A Pagewood body should have a number on the firewall.

Well traveled car, Victoria, WA, NT and Qld.

As Byron said, could be a Melbourne car with Sydney compliance plate, making its history even more interesting.

Thanks for the info guys, this GTS seems to have a colourful history alright. Do you think its worth painting it Etruscan Gold, seems to be a rare colour, as most info Ive seen say it wasnt available in Monaros. And it has a Flax interior as well. Would that make it a rare combination??

Etruscan gold was a GTS colour, not an Monaro or Monaro LS colour.

GTS 350 is rare, and to find two the same colour and trim would be hard. There were over 100 different interior to exterior colours for 71 GTS, 4 for truscan gold alone. Then add cloth inserts and you can almost double this figure. So most combinations are "rare", specially in the top line 350 cars, for which they only made 400 350 coupes in that time and offered nearly that many combinations over the 3 years.

Frank, a HQ GTS350 may not be a muscle car in the US sense, but it is certainly one of Australias versions of performance cars.

I painted a Factory 253 Auto HQ LS coupe about 8 or so years ago in Etruscan Gold Warren, it was all matching numbers and have seen 2 others come up on ebay over the last couple of years (which were not this car ), so maybe it was available on LS also ? Surely no one would have made that a special order in that colour , as its one of the worst colours i have painted. But it was the early 70s i suppose !

I was going to say the same thing, we have an HQ LS in Etruscan Gold in our car club & in most peoples opinion its a good looking car.

It might be a different story in GTS form with black-outs etc.

Dr Terry.

Hi HQ350GTS, A fellow GTS 350 owner here. You have a very nice car by the sound of the original configuration. Despite what some experts have tried to tell you on here, the following is correct information. Your car sounds like a Melbourne build with an incorrect ADR tag fitted to it. No number in the firewall says it is not a Sydney shell. Check in the boot for a hole in the centre of the body behind the spare wheel. You should not find one here if the car is Melbourne build. To confirm if the car was a manual or auto, check the firewall area around the steering column and brake booster as well as the transmission tunnel inside the car. Your colour is a group 2 metallic that was available on LS and GTS at an additional cost. You could also get it on the Premier and Statesman as well as a GTR Torana. The GTS 350 is a muscle car in the true sense of the word as it has two doors as well as the engine from the larger Statesman as standard equipment. Nice car that will look superb when you repaint it in the original colour.

in all due respect to you and you post, i for one apologise and am sorry if everyone that has posted a comment on this thread is not an expert, or doesnt have the "vast" information that you or some others claim to have, but you have only really just repeated and added very little extra than what has already been said..
