Hi Les. I recently bought a Lid Surround & Boot Console HQ HJ LH SLR LX Black for my HJ Monaro sedan. It fits and all is good. It didn't seem to match the rest of the interior though, particularly the dash, so I did some research. Warrens book and all other photos that I can source note that the lid surround and boot console for a HJ GTS should be a frosted silver (to match the dash I am assuming).

I thought that maybe I had ordered incorrectly, so I ordered the HQ GTS version, which came and was completely unsuitable, due to the chrome and the fish scale effect (I will swap it for a black one and just paint it at this stage).

To my question. Is there any plan of making the console and lid surround for the HJ in the correct colour, or is this like the HJ/HX/HZ dash - only in black even though it is completely incorrect? If I have my facts wrong, I am more than happy to stand corrected, but I have not seen one photo of the interior of a HJ with this item in black.

Having said all this, I still believe that Rares does a fantastic job keeping blokes like me in parts for our hobby and do not mean to sound like a whinger or bagger.

Cheers....

You are correct in that the GTS ones are sliver, we however are not able to paint them so we only sell the non GTS ones in black . You should also note the GMH only sold the GTS type dash facia in Black after the initial stock ran out. Having said that I will see if I can find somebody to paint some

The issues with just painting the repro gts dash facias you do les for a HJ is:
- warning lights are incorrect for HJ
- HJ did not have the RTS badge.

oh that reminds me I havent sent the clock to greg. Will do that tomorrow.

Cheers
Jason

Les, the lid and shifter surrounds were never painted and even your chromed HQ machined finish lid and surround are incorrect. They did not have a black border, the complete lid and surround should be fully chromed on the top. Just painting them black does not make them a HJ style.

I purchased a HJ style Rare Spares console lid and shifter surround and was very disappointed with it,the shifter surround was totally wrong and both the lid and surround were completely black, the lid has been painted over on the chrome section and the surround was just black plastic with too large an opening.

HQ console lid and shifter surround... 1) GTS.... fully chromed machined finish. 2) Kingswood... fully chromed with sheet metal infill panels, the metal infill panels have a textured black vinyl on the face side. 3) Premier/Statesman... fully chromed with black plastic infill panels with a woodgrain finish on the face side.

HJ console lid and shifter surround...
Identical to HQ except GTS has black plastic infill panels painted Portland grey on the face side.

At the very least you could do a black plastic set of infill panels smooth on one side and with the correct textured finish on the other side, that way we could at least paint the smooth side portland grey when restoring a HJ GTS or stick them down textured side up for Sandman and kingswood.... also works for the Torana guys...

Your HJ lid.... painted black over machine finish and no chrome borders...

Your HJ shifter surround on the right compared to my original HJ Sandman shifter surround on the left with infill panels removed.

Your HJ lid in the centre with a HJ Premier infill piece from the original HJ Premier lid on the right. On the left is my original HJ Sandman lid with its textured vinyl coated metal panel still fitted. Note the Chromed borders and what is left of the Chrome finish on the handles.

Your lids and surrounds are a good fit but please offer a fully chromed set at the very least so we can achieve a more accurate restoration by fitting correct infill panels ourselves if you are unable to supply them.

I understand what you are saying but when we made these in 2005 we did a lot of research into them, not only with GMH drawing where we could get them but with experts with knowledge of the cars.
We asked a lot of questions to various people to try and get this correct and we think or thought we had . We would not change a part on one persons say so but if you can give us substantial proof that they are all chrome or have a chrome edge the we will certainly look at it or if anyone else on the forum can help , we would like them to be correct. I must point out that it would be easier to chrome the complete thing instead of masking them individually . There are about 10 different types excluding LX.
The gear shift boot retainer on the left is the HQ early HJ type the one on the right is late HJ - HZ we have both.
Thanks for the feedback I hope we can resolve this, had you emailed us instead of posting on the forum it would have been handled much sooner as we do not always see what's on these forums.

No offence Les but in your line of business I wouldn't be relying on what "so called experts with knowledge of the cars" tell you. You should be doing your own research and at the moment the people you have doing the research should be sacked for not doing their job.

Anyone with half a brain and the ability to use Google could find you the proof. A look in any of the multitude of original HQ brochures will show you the proof.

If those aren't enough then genuine Nos parts don't lie!!!!

Don't have Nos parts??? Good original condition original parts don't lie either.

I don't have the time at the moment as I am about to leave on holidays but here.... I'll do a bit of the research for you......

A nice original condition HX Premier

The chrome can clearly be seen on the handle

How about from the HQ brochure of a GTS, console lid is all chrome

or the LS Monaro brochure

Still not sure??? Shifter pic from the HQ brochure, can't get more in your face chrome handle than that....

Your HX and HZ console inserts should have a chrome border as well while we are at it..... How about a genuine Holden Nos part to verify???

Not to mention I have quite a few lids and surrounds with chrome on them or the remnants of chrome on them and I'll bet there are a few Holden wreckers that have a few also.

Seriously, if you can't research such an easy part with a multitude of examples and literature to go off and not get it absolutely correct then something is seriously wrong with your R&D dept. Geez, they couldn't even get the top edge shape correct... originals are squared yet yours are rounded??????? and this was researched in 2005???

We do try to work with customers to solve product issues , in your case I find your comments offensive, insulting and ill informed. You have no idea how much work our team puts into researching products and yes sometimes we do make mistakes. Last year we released about 800 parts that's a lot of research , of those parts we had to change three only one of them was because of research (the HQ grille we copied from a brochure never went into production ). Your comments NOS parts don't lie is incorrect I have handled NOS for over 40 years and I can tell you that I have seen many of the same part numbers that are different. If you have seen GMH drawings you will note that some have amendments to them that would change the part. As for brochures we do not solely rely on them as some use prototype cars with prototype parts that are not used in production, however we do use brochures and Google to some extent .
If when you return from you holidays you have something constructive to say instead of running down my staff then I am willing to listen.

Well said Les.You can please some of the people some of the time ,but not all of the people all of the time. There would be a lot of rusty, useless and ugly old cars around if it was not for your parts.

Hi all. Can I assume that the console lid and shifter surround were painted in Portland Grey? Can I also assume that they weren't finished in fish scale?

If this is the case, if I were to grab a Rares HQ version with the chrome, could I paint the in fills without the fish scale being seen through the paint? I really have to say that I'm finding this very frustrating for such a simple thing.

Cheers guys.
