Hi all just wondering if someone could please help me with a 5.0 I just bought as a builder. The guy I got it from tells me it is from a VQ stato which judging by the engine covers it is this era.The only confusing thing I found is when removing the crank it had 308 cast on it I thought that after the VK they all went 304.
The engine is VU595003 and cast near the timing cover is 14fo.
Any help would be great
Stu

The only thing different between a 308 & 304 crank is the offset machining of the big ends - the actual casting remained the same, so the 308 stayed.

That engine number is smack on for an early July 1990 EFI 5L.
I have 5 V8 commodores recorded with July 1990 build dates, and engine numbers ranging from VU5949xx to VU5956xx.

The casting number - 14th June 1990 - confirms that period, so it has come from either a VN or VQ, and the tag number (the end of the VIN) would be between L446xxx & L449xxx.

Cheers,

Mick

Mick, all VU engines ive seen have had SVU prefixes, so its probably VN. At a stretch it may also out of an early build VG Holden S ute.

I have recorded a couple of July 90 built HSV VQ SV90s that have VU prefixes - I think SVU was only very early VQ motors, and was finished by this period.
