Gday,
First time post for me, stumbled across your forum and found it to be very interesting/informative so registered!
Was wondering if someone has a few pointers on the best 304/5SPD to throw in my HG monaro. Ive had a HG 80437 Monaro sitting in the shed for years, finally have an opportunity to do something with it. Been told VN/VP looms are the best to work with, could one of these be wired to a VT 5L? Also what gearbox would be best out of the 5 speeds, heard the earlier versions run the mechanical speedo cable which saves $, but as far as shifter position, need to cut tunnel is there any box that would be preferable, T5/Getrag.
Would love to throw a 6L in it out of a Commodore wreck but buying the engine and gearbox is one thing, then buying all the conversion bits probably adds up to double the price of installation. Anyone here done this conversion?
Thanks, Steve

Steve
Id forget the 5spd, and go with a box that needs no major floor mods like a Muncie or a TH350.

Thanks Jim and HK1837 for the advise, will do a bit more searching through old posts.
Re keeping it original, thought about going down that path but its a non GTS compliance although original V8 HG80437 so want all the GTS bits on it and if they are going on it, then why not put a more modern driveline in? Any way of telling for sure if was originally a 253 or 308?
When I bought it, it was done as fake GTS 350 with guards, bonnet, tramp rods and tank but fitted with a 307 no transmission.
Cheers, Steve

The VN/P harness is the one to use as there is no security to bypass. There are lots of HK to HG running around with these engines in them these days, a very good update. Floor mods can be a problem, we did a car recently that required floor mods and this became a problem for other things like console, pedals etc, so give some thought to Byrons suggestion.
As for finding original driveline combo, the standard things are worth looking at, saginaw hump on passenger side of trans tunnel and salisbury hump.
These are the possible combinations:
1) No humps: 253 with 3 speed or 253 trimatic or 308 trimatic 2) Saginaw hump no salisbury hump: 253 4 speed 3) Saginaw hump and salisbury hump: 308 4 speed 4) Salisbury hump only: 308 trimatic with optional high performance rear axle.
If number 1 then check bottom of steering column for reversing wires and nuetral safety wires. Also if factory floor shift then 253 3 speed would be out.

Thanks Warren, looks like 253/ 3 speed, no factory hump and shifter hole not original. There is a salisbury hump but it looks like it has been added probably when the 10 bolt/Bathurst tank was fitted.
Probably not the most common combo in a Monaro if one was to keep it original, but think Id prefer a floorshift manual box behind an injected 5L.
Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve, I had a supra 5 spd in my HG before I installed a muncie, by the looks of it, only needed a small mod to the floor. Shifter position was around the same spot. The box was very pleasant and they can handle high HP. Had a mech speedo cable.
