Hi Guys,
Should I paint my HT premier in acrylic or 2 pak?
What will be the pros and cons of both?
Its not going to be a full on show car, but would like to take it to some of the ralles etc.

I did my HK in 2 pak because it was never going to be a concours car. 2 Pak looks the goods as well as being serviceable. Any light scratches or marks will polish out of the clearcoat and a wash and chamois off and your done.

theres a large topic on this on holdenpaedia/oldholden. worth a read.

id go 2 pack, as i did on my GTS for a few reasons.
- its a harder paint finish
- shine straight of the gun because of a chemical reaction. doesnt need to be buffed mechanically like acrylic
- longer lasting, and looks better for longer. (just look at VN/P compared to VR)
- plus more i cant think of right now.

on the downside its much more poisonous; so id get a professional to do it. its harder to paint because you dont necessarily need to buff any imperfections out like you do with acrylic. its also dearer as far as i know..

Thanks for the responses guys,
I am leaning towards 2 pak for those reasons, longer lasting, harder wearing etc.
Do you think it adds value if you paint it in the cars era, or do you think the critics wouldnt mind if your using more modern paints.

Like you said Billa its not going to be a full on show car, the show entrants/judges on here will tell you if there is a points difference either way.

I put my car in shows, but I dont bother with getting it judged because I know Id then have to throw more money at it, lol.

Value? you will never get your money back, well not unless Prems become the next sensation.

We do this for our own enjoyment as well as to turn a few heads, so hey for my 2 cents 2 Pak is the way to go.

I agree with all the above,the only reason Im useing acrylic is because I dont have a proper spray booth and its easier to work with for me,but as I said ,they are only my reasons,2 pack is the best really.

Id tend to go towards Acrylic - easier to paint with, and multiple coats with clear give an unreal deepness to the paint.

I think without a spraybooth or expensive compressor with dry air, 2 Pack is as mentioned dangerous with the nitrocellulose, carcinogenics and cyanide within it, also with the humidity that is almost a constant concern for any painting job, its a lot harder to remove droplets of moisture from the gun once it hits the panels.

2 pak also has the orange peel effect too which acrylic doesnt.

Acrylic can also get the orange peel too. Its more the application that is to blame for peel.

I was a fan of acrylic until 18 months ago when I had my 67 Impala painted in 2 pak......the bonus was I didnt have to spents hours rubbing it back to buff it. Im currently restoring a Sandman van and its going to be 2 pak as well. I cant imagine how many hours, and worn out fingers, it would take to rub back the roof and 1/4s. I know its not "original" but Im not going for concourse anyway....just a neat, tidy van that looks like its new.

You can get an additive for 2 pack to get rid of that real glassy look & then you cant pick it from acrylic in appearance.

when i got my van painted. i was chatting to the owner of the panel shop. he told me in the day they would paint 20 coats of acrylic on a car. 10 coats 70/30 for cover. 5 coats 50/50 then 5 coats of 30/70 with clear mixed in for finish. then buff for hours on end. he also said 5 coats 50/50 mix of acrylic paint is about the same a 1 light coat of 2 pak.

The way i see it after painting acrylic for 15-20 years now is and the same applies to furniture . If you want a durable finish you need to use the urethanes, 2 pacs etc...
But if you want an authentic look that is not so durable you use Shellac on Furniture (french polish standard) and acrylic on Older Cars . You could argue for hours , but i have been dead eye dick for acrylic for years , but the quality of it from Dulux /PPG has dropped and is very watery now , and it is a labour of love all that rubbing and buffing and maintaining .
2 Pac is like anything modern , thay have found a smarter , faster more duarable way of doing things , but to the purest its just not quite right . For people who cant do it themselves and dont understand paint , nor want to buff and polish every now then to keep it good i would use 2 pac . It quick, easy and durable and what most people do today . Thats my take on it .

I guess from the feed back, its really personal preference which paint to use.

Heres one, which brand paint is the best if using acrylic?

Im useing protec on my van now!but it does have 1 draw back and 1 only..ME! All the bad things that have happened are my fault.I have a proffesional painter guiding me thru ,and as soon as he sees it he says....you did this didnt you~! I naturally say,,NO! then take his advice and bingo fixed!but i gotta tell ya acrylic is alot of work.

thats not to say PPG aint good I wouldnt know,never used it.(Adams usually right)

I had the HG redone and doing the EH prem wagon in PPG 2Pak and if you do it right then it looks like acrylic.

I think many people steer away from 2Pak due to the orange peel finish you can get.

Agree 100%. A 2 pak paint applied correctly and then rubbed back like an acrylic looks exactly like acrylic. We should compare cars at the Nationals if you are going. I have also seen acrylic finishes that look like your regular 2 pack off the gun finish. What hasnt been mentioned so far is that the preparation under the paint is vital for the top coats to last. So many cars have a beautiful shine but have uglies under the paint that are trying to get out. Repair sinking and other nasties will spoil any paint job.
