One good thing about replying to questions on the Forum is that you learn about your own car. At least, I do.
My first thought was "what return spring?". Then I checked the good book and saw that there should be one. Saginaws have a different spring to everything else, but the book doesn't show where it should go.
From the photo below, I can only guess that the spring goes from the hole in the lever, just near the adjusting bolt (in line with the yolk in the photo) to the rectangular hole in the rear crossmember. Now I'd better searc around and find one for mine.

Have just scoured my parts book and found part #7449424 which is for the saginaw "LEVER, SPRING, EXTENSION - Hand brake intermediate", that's the only spring mentioned seperately for the saginaw cars. Rares don't stock it.

The GMH workshop manual doesn't show anything and the Gregory's #85 has a photo of a V8 4 speed hand brake setup and it is the same as AMunro327's ie, no spring.

Without checking, the handbrake adjustment is prob the same for all models, so no need to go too far with the diagrams. Just thinking that sometimes bit's go missing off cars because they might be a pain in the bum and make no difference to the operation, maybe said spring falls into that category.

Too true 80569K. That spring has been "missing" on mine for 16 years now.

Keeo I am thinking that HK's with saginaws have a handbrake relay arm similar to all HT's and HG's, if such the spring will possibly run from the hole in the arm rearwards to the floor, I think the hole in the boxed section where the front and rear floor pans join. the pic in the monaro workshop supplement shows the arm with the front of a spring in it but unfortunately that is all. Look under any HT or G should give you a clue if no more info comes to light. Oily
