Hi - I have an original condition HQ wagon (202 trimatic) which runs beautifully, but I am having trouble getting it started on cold mornings. It turns over OK (until the battery starts losing power), but doesn't want to start on the cold mornings. Any suggestions would be much appreciated ...

maybe the choke needs adjusting , what cond is the carby in, some cars are tempermental, I had a HQ that would not start if the choke was used and another that was opposite.

Choke is working OK as far as I can tell, and I use it to start when it is cool outside. I haven't looked at the carby closely, but the engine runs and idles well when it has warmed-up. Cheers ...

Check it is getting 12V to the coil during cranking and 9V running. It may be a poor connection in a connector eg at the firewall joint or ignition switch etc.
If I were you I'd ditch the points dizzy anyway and fit one off a 6cyl WB or VC-VK (VK EFI only, not carby). It will bolt straight in, but you will need the coil as well, and bridge the start/run wires at the ignition switch together so the coil gets 12V always.

Also check fuel is not draining back to the tank ,and by time it get up, your battery has run too far down.EASY TO CHECK ,just pour fuel in the carby BEFORE you try it for the first time on a cold morning.

winter is unkind to batteries, i'd check the battery

most battery shops do free battery checks, i'd suggest getting your battery tested

other than that i'd agree with byron (HK1837) the electric dizzy is the best thing to do for you engine

Whilst an dizzy upgrade would be good ,I dont think its the problem here.
battery/carby/fuel.its one of those.Otherwise it wouldn't run good anytime.

omg...confuse the poor guy even more than he already is..just put a good battery in it and thats that!
they were a pig from day 1 when they were cold. we had one from new and my wise dad made up his own pre-heat pipe from exhaust manifold into the air cleaner, piece of copper pipe bent around the exhaust and drilled into the side of the aircleaner, once it started, after a min or 2 if was ok.
simple as that, he even made a few more for neighbours that had HQ'S when we they were newish
