My wifes EB Fairmont is causing us some dramas as far as fan belt noise.

We have changed all the belts and still a loud noise eminating from the engine area can be heard, mechanic says pulleys are all ok.

What else could be causing the problem.............it is driving us crazing with the noise

kind regards

John

Thanks: 1 times
This might sound a bit silly but I had a similar problem once. Thought it was fan belts or a pulley. Turned out to be the distributer. If all else has failed try listening there.

Another method of diagnosis in addittion to what BigCav has suggested is remove the three belts one at a time and see which removed belt makes the noise go away.

The bearings in the idler pulleys tend to die every couple of hundered thousand KM.

good one i haven't heard that one before

what i use is a peice of garden hose about 1m long, put 1 end to your ear and move the other end around the suspect area

just be very carefull when doing this around a running engine!!!

My old EA had a similar noise which turned out to be the idler pulley bearing...on the bright side it's an easy fix. :)
