My wifes EB Fairmont is causing us some dramas as far as fan belt noise. We have changed all the belts and still a loud noise eminating from the engine area can be heard, mechanic says pulleys are all ok. What else could be causing the problem.............it is driving us crazing with the noise kind regards John Edited by user Thursday, 1 July 2010 4:40:54 AM(UTC)

This might sound a bit silly but I had a similar problem once. Thought it was fan belts or a pulley. Turned out to be the distributer. If all else has failed try listening there.

Another method of diagnosis in addittion to what BigCav has suggested is remove the three belts one at a time and see which removed belt makes the noise go away.
The bearings in the idler pulleys tend to die every couple of hundered thousand KM.
Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only. |

My old EA had a similar noise which turned out to be the idler pulley bearing...on the bright side it's an easy fix. :)
