Hi guys

Can anyone tell me a few things about adr27 and the 350 chevs

what date did adr27 come in? iv read july/august 1973 right threw to late 74 so im not certain

does anyone know how many 350 chev's were built to adr27 specs?

what did they change on the 350's?

were the significant majority of hq 350's pre adr27?

ADR27 was introduced on 1st January 1974, but was applied a bit earlier by GMH. As most of the 350 powered HQ's were produced prior to the end of 1973 the bulk of them will be pre ADR27. There are some later than late 1973, especially Statesmans.

What was changed on the ADR27 350's was (quoted from the bible):

Heads
Exhaust valve springs
Pistons
Rings
H balancer
Thermostat
Dip stick
Auto dizzy
Fuel line
Intake
Carb
Air cleaner
Revised power steer and aircon mounting.

Hi Cavan,

My HQ 350 was built in October 1973 and doesn't have ADR27 listed on the compliance plate.

Did ADR27 make any difference to the performance of the 350s?

Not so much ADR27 AFAIK, but the specification of the engines coming from North America. Remember US engines were pretty much strangled after 1970, especially ULP introduction in (from memory) 1972.

would this mean that the 350s imported after '72 (assuming this was the intro for unleaded in the USA) would have hardened valve seats?

As far as I know, yes. This is the reason why 882 cast heads after 1972 are renowned for cracking as the seats are only flame hardened, just like VL V8 heads were.

Theres a number I'm not aware of, what are 882 heads?

I thought HQ 350 head numbers went like this:
3932441 for 71,72...3973487 for 73 and 3973487uu and 3998993uu for 74

882's weren't on GMH vehicles as far as I know. They were just a common head used after 1972 on heaps of SBC's. One of the most found on those running 2nd hand imports that flooded into Australia in the 80's and early 90's. I've got them here in 350 and 400 specification. And renowned for cracking.

You guys all need the little black book from Warwick to clear this up. $50 was a really small price to pay for something that will give the answers you need. Quoting from it on p12 are the cylinder head numbers 3973487, 3988820, 333882 which apply to the 1973 and 1974 engines. ADR27 spec engines entered production from 9/73 but not all have the trade mark two piece top radiator hose with the christmas tree fitting in it. Engines with the 333882 heads also got the 320234 inlet manifold and the 1112044 distributor.
