I have just installed a 304 fuel injected motor onto my HZ. I have converted it from fuel injection to a carby set up. The carby is a Holly 600 secondary vac.

To get the fuel to the carby I have put on an electic fuel pump which is have attached to the front end of the motor down near the sump.

The problem im having is that the pump seems be continually ticking over and at times does not get enough fuel to the carby. I can see this as I have a clear in line fuel filter between the carby and pump.

The fuel pump is an ACA 12v 4-7lbs pump. The reason for using this pump is so that I dont blow the diaphram in the carby

What i need to know is:

1.Does the electic pump get effected by the heat from the motor as the pump seems to get quite warm
2. The pump ticks over even when the fuel filter is full...is this normal for this type of pump
3. Should i reposition the pump some where else away from the heat of the motor. If so any ideas where.
4. Or shouild i get another fuel pump like a holly blue and a pressure regulator

It sounds like you are using a Facit type fuel pump.
These pumps work at there best as a push type pump not a pull type pump.(To the best of my knowledge most electric pumps work at there best this way.)
So the best place for it is a close to the fuel tank as possible and if possible below tank level as they do not always self prime to well either.
It will work the way you have it but just not as well as it could at the rear.
It will just push the fuel forward well but mounted at the front it there is even the slightest place on the the fuel lines that it can leak it will draw air in to the system rather than pull the fuel forward.
Also with these pumps as with most pumps try to rubber mount it not solid mount as it will help keep the noise of the pump down.
If it is a facet pump it will always tick but normally with a full load of fuel it should be moderately quite but the more load you put on to it the louder it gets.

as hqss says best to put the pump near the fuel tank as its a "push fuel pump" not a suck up type.P.S.Most run all the time(Holley)

I have thopught about a mechanical pupl off a 253 whihc was originally in the HZ. Any thoughts about that

The mechanical pump will work IF you have the correct timing cover ie pre EFI and the eccentric cam is still on the end of the camshaft

If it still has the standard cam in the EFI motor, the drive pin in the end of the cam is likely going to be too short.
I've only found it long enough in really early VN EFI motors (like around engine number VU590xxx range).

mmazz30,commy,good point I never even thought about the cam,not dealing with EFI's at all.

You'll find they still have the eccentric in them as a cam sproket retainer - just that the pin is shorter, and doesn't reach into the hole in the eccentric to drive it. I've managed to remove the pin & replace it with a longer one when I needed to on a VH project (carby on an EFI motor), but it's a PITA job.

Ops forgot to tell you that I have put in a GROUP A Crow cam will the mechanical pump still be ok especially the eccentric

It would depend on how long the drive pin is in the cam - only Crow would know that!

My thanks to all who replied..I solved the problem by installing a mechanical fuel pump. I used the timing case and the mechanical fuel pump from my old 253. I had the change the pin in the cam for the eccentric. Result is works like a treat no more fuel issue
