If you've seen my build thread you'll know it's being done properly and well. It's no show car, just a nice streeter that will see club displays/shows at most.

http://www.aussiev8.com....-efn-202-path-glory.html (sorry about the link to another site!)

Question is about paint. I'm not going to spend top dollar on top shelf because it's simply not necessary. I seem to have lined up a very, very good young painter. I've seen his work and using cheap De Beers paint at the smash shop, straight off the gun he's got an exceptional finish. I have access to a spray booth as well.

My body guy uses PPG. The smash shop reckons even the De Beers looks fine with the right application. And i've been told Mapi (i think?) is a local paint that's quite good.

It'll be clear over base, 2pak Holden Aztec Red.

Anyone have thoughts/experiences on paints, prive vs quality etc?

Use the best thiners you can buy is my only advice! This is from a bad experience with cheaper thinners.

Match your products. Use a paint application system of one brand to ensure compatibility of materials. I would rather spend money on a good quality, reputable product range, to ensure all the work is not wasted. A few extra bucks at the start can save plenty at the end.
Cheap will always be cheap.
Quality, value for money will last.

We use a lot of different brand paints at work, as the customers have preferences for certain brands, and the tradesmen can do anything. If you ask them what the best they would use on their own car, they say Standox.

De Beers is our default paint if a customer doesn't care what brand. It has most of the characteristics required to make a good paint job, and is a great smash job paint system as it is inexpensive and quick.

The main failing of DeBeers is the inability to match to older or unique colours that are not already on their system.

Price v's quality. Yep you are right.

im not a painter, and its hard to beat Pete's advice on such things, but we ( i say we but my input was limited to making coffee and staying out of my mates way lol) sprayed my engine bay with debeers in my "sterile and awesomely prepared garage" and it came out pretty nice.

Again, Pete will probably smash me for this, but a good painter and "bad" paint, is easily preferable to the situation in reverse.

Personally, id go with what the painter is comfortable with then if it gets ballsed up it aint your fault lol.

All valid points, cheers.

Builder used Glazurit primer on the outside which is meant to be good stuff. Said the actual top coat brand is just a preference, take my pick. Most seem to reckon good prep and priming is the main reason for a good paint job. Stands to reason.

Painter is comfortable with De Beers, so i'm going to have a better chat with him about it. After all, a good smash repair finish is different to a good private build paint finish. If he's confident, i'll go with that not for price, but for confidence of a good job.

If he assures me it'll be better with say, PPG, i'll spend the extra.

Don't get me wrong, DeBeers is a good product, just we find some limitations for what we do at our work.

Standox, PPG, Glasurit, Spies Hecker, Akzo Nobel, Mipa are all brands that have a good strong manufacturers support available.

I have seen some great paintjobs done with cheaper brand paints, but the real proof is in the long term ability for the products to resist fading or surface breakdown.

There are several aspects to what brand paints shops will use if they have an exclusive brand. Cost, speed, application technique, colour matching availability, manufacturer support, training available, ease of use, compatability, etc.

This all said and done, My wifes bus is painted with DeBeers products, however a bit of Standox tinter was used in colour matching as the DeBeers did not have the range of tinters available. Using small amounts of another systems tinters in a basecoat pearl colour is not ideal, but not necessarily bad.

My car is painted in Spies Hecker products from 15 years ago. Our other car was painted exclusively in PPG products 5 years ago as per what brand was in the shop I was working at that time.
