To be fair, Chev won Bathurst! They don't run Holden or GM Powertrain spec engines any more. Still good to see the badge winning, and the Fords getting nowhere. What I found much more interesting was the Muscle Car races beforehand. How good was it to see XA GT's racing HQ coupes and Kingswoods and also HT coupes and Valiants!

I still wish they'd get rid of this stupid formula and run the production engines like they do in the V8 utes. Those things are very close racing using very different engines. As it is the Commodores run an old GenI/II engine and the Fords run an old Windsor, neither is available anymore.
I saw the start of the race. How good (as in impressive) was that crash by the Bundy Commodore? The panels let go like they were made of 'glass. Must have been a frightening ride for the driver.

From memory yes, can't remember if 1993 or 1995 or was it much later?. He was also the last to run Walkinshaws after others had gone to VN GroupA. The last year an aussie engine won it would be a few years back with a Ford, if you count the 302 Windsor being in a production Aussie car as an Aussie engine.

What got me was how come Leanne Tander was able to race an XA phase 4?
Does that mean that someone will be able to roll up with an XU2 V8 in the series?
Same thing in my opinion.

the code XU2 was given to the SLR5000, even in the parts book xu2 is shown as a decal on the front guard of an LH.

A 888 racing purpose built V8 Supercar was the first car across the line. The lion badge in the grille is one of only a handful of Holden parts on the racecar. To call this racecar a Holden is wrong as it is as far from a Holden as a Falcon is. The event known as Bathurst is now purely sports entertainment and has nothing to do with motorsport. Holden the company will be the winner from this as will the many other connected sponsors.

Does anyone know what year that a proper Holden last won the race at Bathurst?

Where do I start?

1. Leanne Tander was not driving a Phase 4, she was driving an XA GT modified to Sports sedan regs, it was not a Group C touring car. There is a very real chance that is was just a GT replica to boot, with the insane prices of these cars, why would anyone race a genuine GT. Those model Camaros & Mustangs were never allowed even in Group C anyway. An XU2 is an LH/LX SL/R5000 not an LJ V8 XU1.

2. The last 'real' Holden to win at Bathurst was in 1972, when Brocky won in an LJ XU1. Group C (1973 to 1984) & Group A (1985 to 1992), whilst interesting, were still modified cars. True, they were much closer to factory specs than V8 Supercars, they were none the less not 100% real Holdens.

3. If you stretch the discussion further & say that any car with a space-frame chassis is not a 'real' car' then Group C & Group A would both be considered 'real'. as a matter of fact, in the early days of V8 racing (1993 to 1995) before they were renamed V8 Supercars, they still had a full factory body shell.

4. Perkins won Bathurst in 1993, 1995 & 1997, from memory he used a Holden motor in both 1993 & 1995. He only changed to the Chev style Nascar motor because of economy of scale. Chev stuff was plentiful & easily available off the shelf whereas he had to custom build most of the bits for his Holden. He stated at the time that the Chev had no real performance advantage, it just cost less to build.

5. The current 'Chev' motor is essentially a current GM Powertrain Nascar engine de-stroked to 5-litre & fitted with a home-grown injected inlet plenum. The heads are 'Aurora' style, not SBC style, with the ports arranged in the same order as EFI Holden V8s & Cleveland V8s.

6. It's difficult to say which version of Bathurst is 'best' & while V8 Supercars could be a lot better, Series Prod, Group C & Group A all had their problems.

Dr Terry

Just to throw another spanner in Dr Terry's answer, the last real "Holden" to win could be argued was in 1969, when Colin Bond's HT GTS350 won! This is using the argument that a Torana isn't a Holden. A HT is a Holden built by GMH and a Torana is a smaller car built by GMH. Basically a HT is a "HT Holden". An LJ is an "LJ Torana". Being pedantic I know, and may not even be 100% correct! Good food for thought though.

Along the same lines, the last real "Holden" to contest the Bathurst 1000 was probably the HQ Kingswood in 1974 (raced as an XW8).

Yes but it was a current production engine, hence why I credited the later Fords with running an Aussie engine (at least until the 302W finished).
