I haven't seen 11VTxxxxxx before, but could it be 11WTxxxxxx ? This would equate to a 1983 WB Statesman engine.

I was hopeful for a 1973 block, as its for sale at the right price, but it came with a commodore of some description and I know the 11QT prefix is normally statesman the guy is going to take close ups for me, the date stamp is the important one for my application. I'd agree with Greg on this one - adding 11 in front makes it look like a WB engine, and can be used to prevent a sus motor from being flagged up at rego time..
Engine number VT375xxx is perfect for that casting date ('83), so I see only 2 possibilities:: 1. It was stamped like that to alter it's ID and prevent detection. 2. The slim chance it was a mistake at the engine plant.
How well lined up is the 11? Does it look like it was done by hand?

Mick, 11WT375xxx is also perfect for 1983 as WB and Commodore numbers are the same. The 11's are always rough looking as they were not done at the same time as the rest of the number. Same as the X on LX and UC 6cyl Toranas.

Ok its starting to look like a WB or commodore blue motor! I hope to get some good pics in the next few days. At what stage did Holden start using the 5.0L on the side instead of the 308? And could the 13E3 be read as 13/may/1973 and 13/may/1983? or have i got it all wrong LOL

From memory 5.0L started around when the engines were changed from 308 to 5.0L ie mid VK. Mick might elaborate a bit on this, or correct me if i'm being too general. 5.0L also dissapeared mid VR when the blocks were machined to be suitable for 5.0L or 5.7/350 applications. I also remember 308 appearing on both sides maybe around the start of VK? In 1973 the V8's used US coding so 13/5/73 would look like E133.

So 13E3 is definitely 1983 blue motor? Forgive my ignorance, I'm on a bit of a learning curve at the moment, never really worried about engine numbers and date stamps before, around when did the date casting change from US to AUS style? Also I really do appreciate the input so far. FNQ HQ GTS/4 Edited by user Thursday, 14 October 2010 12:19:33 AM(UTC)

I'm pretty sure the 11WT prefix is specific to WB Statesman. If you're looking for a 73 dated engine then you really need the corresponding engine number for your application. Statesmans HQ-HZ 308 had 11QT as a prefix while all other body styles 308 had QT prefix.
If you're using the motor for a 73 GTS then you need to make sure you have the correct prefix and date code. ie QT prefix and date code E133.
In short, this motor is no good for any '73 application when it comes to it's numbers.

Yes! I was starting to get that, LOL. As i indicated previously I was never realty concerned with originality till now hence the learning curve. The engine I was asking about is a fresh reco from a reliable source (legitimate) at the right $$$$ and we all know the price of engine machine work. So I may still grab it. But I have a new found interest in originality and plan to pursue it with hopefully some of your help.

I wouldn't get to concerned about finding an "original" engine for the car. Unless it is THE original it is really a fool's game, just get a QT block from around the right time. Trying to find a date coded engine that is not the original is a stupid game in my honest opinion! At the end of the day an 11WT block is as orignal to the car as a QT engine from a HZ. Having said that though, just having a QT prefix in there regardless of it's origins does look better if you are trying to restore it to as close to original as you can. But if the car is to be a semi-modified just use whatever you like. BTW 11WT should be WB Deville, 12WT is Caprice.

Yes I agree and if my GTS didn't have its original engine (which it has) I would just stick a Chev in it. The reason I'm chasing this 308 is for a 73 HQ 1 toner I have, also the price is right, but the 1983 date stamp may mean I would have to modify the fuel tank and fit a charcoal canister. yuk FNQ HQ GTS/4 Edited by user Thursday, 14 October 2010 6:40:03 PM(UTC)
