I am rebuilding my HT Monaro V8 GTS, and need to find out which of the Saginaw Gearboxes was the original close ratio model, and how to identify them. I found several differing opinions on teh web as to what was factory fitted. I believe that there was a 2.2 first gear available, but I get confused with different input shafts etc. Does anyone have accurate information on this?

There is no close true ratio Saginaw in HK-HG, they only got the 2.54:1 M21 box and the 2.85:1 M22 boxes. A V8 HT Monaro will always be an M21 where 4spd is optioned, obviously standard on GTS.

Thanks for the reply HK1837. How can I dentify the 2.54 box, as I have 2 with different looking input shafts? Not sure if either came from a HT though. I heard that there were some from 6 cylinder US cars floating about.

I broke one of these in my first Monaro as a youth. Is there anything that can be done to strengthen them? I broke the input shaft with a warm small block and I want to build a reasonable engine for this car.

I hoped to keep the car largely as it came from the factory, but my friends are in my ear to change to the Muncie Rock Crusher from the HQ. If I did this, would I need to alter the transmission tunnel, or does the Muncie fit as is?

Put it in first, mark the input shaft and output shaft and turn the input shaft. Count how many times it spins for 1 x rev of the output. This will answer your question.

Your mates are already on to how to strengthen a Saginaw....replace with a Muncie. Note I don't think HQ is a rock crusher, just a big block M21 Muncie. M22 Muncie is the rock crusher. If you put one with normal input and outpus shafts it will fit where the Saginaw fits, but rear mount might need some work (can't recall). Speedo cable will switch back to the driver's side, so you'll have to relocate the cable back to the 6cyl hole in the firewall (and get a shorter cable). Shifter might need some work to fit under the tunnel though if it is mounted to the box. Original HT shifter and linkages will control it but reverse linkage has to be modified.

I have been running 400 horses through my saginaw with no issues yet. It was built over 10 years ago, so it is possible to get them strong enough. You just need to find a gearbox builder that knows what they are doing.
From my limited knowledge on the issue, first gear is the problem. It welds itself onto the shaft it spins on. My builder takes out the 'wavey washers' on each side of the gear and replaces them with solid shims, this stops the gear rocking and welding itself.

Crappily explained... but that is the best I can explain it.

Have another guy in the club, used the same builder, he is running well over 500 horsepower in his HG with a saginaw and it is still going. (Although he does say that it will be replaced soon. He has a T350 built ready to go)

So they are not as bad as people believe.

Easy check to see if it is a 2.54 ratio. It will only have 1 groove in the input shaft.
