Hi I have just replaced all tie rod ends as well as pitman arm, draglink and idler arm support but still have movement in the steering that seems to be coming from each end of the idler arm ( the thing that joins to draglink at one end and idler arm support at other)this is the only thing I didnt replace as I was told that this is a non maintenance item. any ideas or suggestions thanks

idler support levers/arms do wear out..if you are turning your wheel from side to side and it is going up and down its stuffed...im pretty sure i still have some nos items here.. going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

If you have movement at either end of the idler then the fault lies in the draglink or idler support/bush . What you were told about the idler arm itself is partially correct, because it is nothing more than a bar with 2 non-wearing holes in it. The front hole is tapered & no movement should occur within the hole itself. The rear hole is threaded & the bush should be tightened within it.
Your problem could be that either end has not been tightened fully, or the play may just be the new idler bush. I've seen plenty of new Asian idler support kits which had as much play as the old genuine unit. A bit of play at the bush won't effect steering much because at normal suspension height the tie rod & draglink will be in the same line.

Thanks Dr T draglink is holden NOS and idler support is TRW (couldnt find a holden NOS one. I will replace the existing idler with holden NOS one which I have coming from Classic Oz Wreck, then I'll have a closer look at the TRW idler support, if it is doubtful I plan to try a Pedders replacement for this. I am also assuming that the parts have been fitted correctly as it was done by a mechanic immediately prior to a wheel alignment but of course I will check that all is tight
