My 11/74 HJ Premier has Girlocks, maybe they were used on some later HQ's?

Greg, were these Girlocks the Cast Iron or Aluminium calipers in HQ Commerials?
Looking at the Bendix webpage, the bloke at the Brake parts is right. Bendix show pads for Girlock Cast Iron caliper only fitted to HX, and Girlock Aluminium was fitted to HJ on. PBR is not of my concern.

Only mentions HX as Cast Iron Girlock caliper, but looks like Aluminium Girlock may use the same pads, but it doesn't actually state HQ-HJ if it's Cast Iron or Aluminium.

Ok thanks, but Greg also states HX as alloy Girlock, when in fact both Cast iron and Aluminium were used.

It's all very confusing because Girlock was known as Girling in the early 70s. I'm not quite sure of the exact changeover date.

To my knowledge there are 4 main different caliper types, more, if you count the WB style hose change & the updates made to some of the calipers along the way.

The 4 types are:
1. HQ/J/early HX PBR cast iron (DB6 pads)
2. Late HQ/J/early HX Girling/Girlock cast iron (DB1004 pads)
3. Late HX/Z PBR alloy (DB1029 pads)
4. Late HX/Z/WB Girlock alloy (DB1023 pads)

The confusing part is that the PBR alloy caliper still has a large cast iron bracket, but the head is aluminium alloy. The chassis break for early & late HX is when the prefix went from AHX to BHX. This was also when the larger brake m/cyl & 2-pin differential pressure switch were introduced.

I agree with Greg that for some reason you seem to see most cast iron Girlocks fitted to commercials & wagons. Theoretically with their larger pad area they would be better than the PBR cast iron type.

terry,technically there is 5 different calipers..in the hq hj the pbr is all cast iron and in the hx the pbr is what you describe as cast and alloy..its very similar to lx/uc torana but instead of having torana cast on it it has holden cast on it..

My 7/74 HQ has factory cast iron Girlocks too.
