Hello all....
So, I have just bought a 63 EJ with one very sad gear 3 speed manual (no syncro and pops out of 3rd above 40mph) After removal of said offending crunch box and trying to do a little research as to what it is I'm loooking to replace it with I have been left rather stumped..
Ok, so what I have found out so far is that she is out of either a ej or eh, bassed on the linkages. I'v been told the only diff between the eh and ej is the lenght of the tail shaft? Although nobody has told me what length is what.. So after abit of joy with an abacus and some string it works out to be 285mm in the tail, does this mean anything to anybody??
Also would the code L28A help? Because it sure as hell has'nt helped me so far! Seems most people over here are either sceared of the mighty 3 speed or just have no idea..
Oh yea, its out of a wagon as well if that helps anybody...

So yea, anybody who could help identifie my box would get big thumbs up from me!

There is no difference in length between EJ & EH manual gearboxes. However, there are 2 different gearboxes which differ at the bell housing face. The EJ & early EH 149 box has only 4 bolts attaching the box to the bellhousing. The 179 style box, which carries over to late EH 149 & all HD, HR & HK has 5 bolts. The slave cylinder is also different.

If your car has an original EJ bellhousing, which it probably does, if it has a Grey motor & rear side mounts, then only the earlier gearbox will fit.

Sweet.. Yea the car has been fitted with a 179 at some point in its life. I'l pop down tonight and check/count the bellhousing bolts.

I wonder if the person suggesting that EJ and EH have a different tailshaft got confused with the extension housing on the gearbox.

The EH (red)engine/box mounts with two mounts on the engine and one mount on the gearbox extension housing.

The EJ (grey) engine/box as mentioned mounts with one mount on the front of the engine and two on the bell housing so if my memory serves me correctly there is no provision on the EJ extension housing for the gearbox mount.

Having said that though the extension housings are interchageable.


Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only.

Hi the EJ and EH did have a different tailshaft it was the back uni for the diff ej had bolts eh U bolts ....

Correct, but the centre to centre length was still the same for all EJ & EH manual cars.

There was another difference too, the EJ & EH149 shaft was 2.5-inches in diameter while the EH 179 was 2.75-inches in diameter.
