Hi all

I have always wondered what you are getting then you buy a changeover "reco". Lets take a 202 Holden Red, standard reco changeover. Do they do only what's necessary? It is a standard bearings/rings/valve regrind & gaskets? Do they bore or crank grind if it needs it? Lifters? I know it's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" thing, but it's never been quite clear.

I,ve alway,s thought a reco motor was built with standard part,s and they did crank grind and everything else?
but someone on here will know. You could probably clock up more mile,s than the Leyland Bro,s with a reco 202.

Good question. The word reco has been abused in recent years.

Reco is supposed to mean reconditioned, in other words rebuilt back to 'as-new' specs.

In my mind, a 'reco' motor should have its block stripped & chemically cleaned, be decked, rebored & honed with new pistons & rings, resized conrods with new big end bearings, reground crankshaft with new main bearings. New or reground camshaft & bearings, as well as new lifters, timing gears & oil pump. The head should be stripped & cleaned & faced & have new valves or guides & seats ground. New welsh plugs to block & head & a new water pump. New seals & gaskets throughout. How much extra gets done depends on what your definition of a complete motor is.

I have over-simplified this description for the sake of brevity, but basically any wearing part is replaced or re-machined to 'as-new' spec.

My understanding is that a reconditioned motor can actually have very little done to it. Just cleaning and painting it constitutes reconditioning. I learnt this from my father who used to work for a well known wreckers, thjey would sell reconditioned starters and genaerators/alternators, all that my father did was clean them up and paint them, when he questioned the morality and legality of this he was told and the company was legally in the clear. Morality was not even a thought.
However, it is a different story with a rebuilt motor. (or other parts). A rebuilt motor etc. MUST be rebuilt to the original specifications allowing for the bores or crank being reground to manufacturers specifications for regrinds.
Also all moving/wearing parts must be new.

So always insist on a rebuilt motor and a warranty saying its rebuilt.

Any ideas on costing for a rebuilt stock standard hq 253 and trimatic?
Obviously I'm just talking ballpark, couldn't expect an exact amount. Whole block and trans never been out of the car, also considering a new manifold and carburator as a possiblity. But just an estimate for the rebuilt would be a great help.

I've been getting quotes in Sydney for my 308, at around $3k with engine removed and delivered to engine reconditioner (by me)and they then get all wearing parts replaced, pretty much as outlined by Terry. I think one was Gem (?) and the other was a local mechanic. A performance V8 engine shop quoted me about $5k for a standard rebuild or about $6.5k for a stroker, although I think the quote included some head work and balancing, which is supposed to be a good idea.

I'm planning on pulling and stripping my 308 and doing the run around the machining shops and component suppliers for parts I want in the rebuild and then delivering the lot to an engine builder to put together for me. I have read threads on this, but I don't really know how much I'd save doing it this way, anyone else know?

had my 307 done 2 years back they stripped it hot tanked it replaced pistons ,rods kept the original crank which got balanced.ring bearings gaskets new cam with a slight lift new lifters push rods & rocker arms.new oil pump, harmonic balancer and timing chain the block was decked and bored.the heads were stripped ,cleaned, faced new stainless valves sleeves and retainers all to suit lpg or unleaded new valve springs.the harmonic the crank & flywheel and clutch were all balanced together.all painted &put back together that cost just under $5000

I went the cheaper way, I came across a Hj with a few year old rebuilt 253 and good trimatic ,dual fuel, motor runs well no noises or smoke for $700. Just put them into my WB van.
