Let me get this right. 1. You have roadworthy car (HR front on an HD won't affect that). 2. You have a legit chassis number (centre of firewall). 3. You have a legit engine number (correct for model series). 4. You have a roadworthy certificate which matches the car. 5. They won't register it because you don't know the previous rego number ?? Are they kidding. This scenario must crop up all the time in the classic car arena. What state do you live in, you use the term RTA, so is it NSW ? I've registered many cars like this in NSW. Can you 'find' a receipt that says you purchased it unregistered from a friend ? Maybe if you went to another RTA branch with some more convincing paperwork you could get it done. The problem is that HR era cars were never registered using a chassis number, only an engine number. So they cannot have the chassis number on there records for that era. Ask for the supervisor, and tell him you have the receipt stating you bought it unregistered, and get a staturary declaration from the police that you are telling the truth, and it has to happen. I have bought three cars over the years with original rego up to as late as 1975 model that have no chassis number recorded on the registration, and when I have been to transfer documents at the VicRoads, they just get their supervisor to ok the placement of the non existent chassis number onto their system. I always have previous rego numbers though, so that may be where the joining thread to original existence is. If it is old or rare - Cut it! http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

Greetings, Not wanting to sound negative in the extreme here, but could this be the beginning of the end for what the authorities call 'clunkers'? It is the start of a new year after all and the decision may have been made to rid the roads of more of the older cars by means such as this. There has been a lot of talk about this happening one day and perhaps that day has arrived in Victoria. Trying to re-register an old car may be a thing of the past. A lot has been happening newswise to draw attention away from something like this. I for one hope it isn't the case. Please keep us posted on what happens as this may be a wake up call for all concerned enthusiasts. look out, the guru is coming through... |

Hey guys. I had the same problem with my HX ute. It was off the road from 3 year and no record with the RTA. I had to book this car in for a full RTA inspection. I went to the office in sunshine. Dont see why they would not rego it if you had a RWC and all the points pointed out with Dr Terry. edit : did you go looking dodgy ? also did you have a receipt ? I bought an unreg'd car interstate (VIC), never rego'd in NSW before - so no records.
5 years after buying it I rocked up with the form filled in, a receipt from the seller, blue slip, and green slip (TPI insurance), and they rego'd it no probs at all.
I'd suggest a different branch, and make sure every i is dotted & every t crossed on every single bit of paperwork you can find that you think they may need.
Cheers,

Git might be onto something here.... I know of 2 people who have had major hassles getting their HQs registered since the start of the year. Both cars have been off the road for years and as such aren't on the Vicroads 'system', which only goes back to 1989. If Vicroads can't find it on their system, they don't want to know about it. Another rumour I've recently heard is that Victoria is about to introduce the annual roadworthy system, similar to NSW. |

the main reason for annual checks is to provide work for the dealerships and mechanics, then they licence the mechanics to ensure it is a closed shop. while the checking people continue to push the rubbish on the roads they cannot justify forcing annual checks, especially when newer cars don't have to undergo checks. If they could ban you repairing you own car they would.

What I did was go to a holden dealer and ask them if they could help the guy i spoke to didn't know what a hd was then went to cop shop they took details and contacted stolen car squad ,they rang me and ran checks then sent an email to rta who then contacted them back saying they had no records (the police use the rta's database anyway) I then went to the guy I bought the car from and got him to rewrite the receipt with the chassis number on it then rang nsw and adelaide rta's and got then to run checks and they had no records either . Then i got a stat deck from cop shop and wrote everything that i had done and explianed to them that there was not anything else that i could possible do to find any information on the car as back in the sixtys they didn't record chassis numbers only engine numbers so if you havn't got the original engine for the car thats what causes the problem i think . Anyone about to register there project make shaw the receipt has the chassis number on it as you will probable have to go threw the same bureaucracy rubbish that i did .They gave me the reg in the end so alls good Thankyou to those that replied with there suggestions

when i have brought stuff that has had several unlicenced owners in succession, if i intend to re register i get a reciept of engine number and chassis and VIN. and get them to sign it. getting it registered from there is no problem in WA.
in times where i have had no reciept or paperwork, i have been instructed by the DPI to do a stat dec..

I wonder how they would deal with a car from another State or overseas? _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

One of those 2 cars is from NSW, so it is hoped that supplying the previous NSW rego will help. Shall find out soon. One would assume that different states can compare information? |

Where that'll be coming from, is no HX model except statesman was standard with 308. That too is rubbish, as the 8WQ37 was standard with 308, but maybe they are working from information when the LE wasn't available. If he needs it I can send you scans of ID plates from HX's with 308's that aren't Statesmans. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

I Have never heard such rubbish, take them a brochure of one,or better still ,take them a holiday brochure to some distant island"one way" as Byron says, get a scan or photo of ID Plates and then they have to register it or face discrimination/victimization charges.IDIOTS,even if no HX came out with one they still cant say "NO" They have to give you an engineering reason not to.There is hq,hj,hx,hz's with 454's in(engineer certs but still)? It's almost as if Vicroads staff have been instructed to make it very hard for people to register an 'old' car if it has been out of rego for a while. |
