I need a spare key for the VR. I can get a key cut thjat will unlock it but need the electronic one that will start the car. Holden want about $200 for one. Can a key off another commy be reprogrammed? I was thinking of hitting the wreckers for a st. Also thought of changing ignition can buy a complete new lock and keys set off ebay for about $80 but suspect they still won't work as the computer will need to be programmed. suggestios?

You can't re-use keys that have already been programmed to another car. The lock & key set off ebay (if it's all new) will need to go to Holden to be programmed $$$.
Wait until MrMinit have their sale on, and they usually do them for less than $80.
They do a key that is "blank" so to speak in it's memory, and as long as you can unlock the car with an existing key, the new one will learn the car & program itself to it.
Also, try a few local locksmiths. The last one (VS) that I had done - new key blade & head, was $65 and he even programmed it to the car within that price.
I don't think the locksmiths do the VR style key anymore though, so you'll end up with the VS shaped one, but they work the same when used on the VR - the only difference is the shape of the buttons. |

Hi John,
There is a locksmith on Great Eastern H'way opposite the Sandringham Hotel in Redcliffe, that offers cheap re-cuts, but not sure about re-programming.
I'll find his trading name for you, as it might be an idea to check him out.
Kind regards George

any mechanic with a CARMAN scan tool can code these keys in.....all you need to do, is buy a key from holden/coventrys and find a mechanic with a carman scan tool. if you let me know what area you are in, i can point you in a good direction.

thanks guys. I was going bush and needed a spare sort of straight away so went down to SAP in leederville and they cut and programmed a key for $110. as a sidehint, it shows it pays to check if there is a spare when buying a car as some of these keys can cost a LOT more than $110 and you have to take that into account when doing the sums.
