The brake warning light has come on and stayed on in my HJ. I checked the switch on the handbrake and it looks ok. I disconnected the wire from the proportioning valve and the light went out! The brakes seem to stop ok. Does anyone know what is going on?

You have or have had a pressure differential between your front and rear brake circuits as Jim said.
To reset the switch unplug the wires then unscrew the switch completely then re fit it.
I would strongly advise bleeding you brakes though as those switches don't trigger for no reason. |

Do you think the switch might be faulty or stuck? The car is only used for short trips once a week.

The switchtes rarely go faulty.
If you REALLY think that there is not a problem with your brakes just reset the swich as I described above and take the chance. If it triggers the next time you use the brakes then you are in for a brake bleed.
You will be in for at least a brake bleed as it will trigger again.

So to reset the switch I just remove it and place it back in again or is there someting else I need to do with it?
