Thanks Warren and Mick
Just wondering if there is something wrong in the electronics or BCM, the speed alert went on the blink today.
are the BCM interchangeable with the VR/VS or do I have to match the numbers?
Incidentally there are only black wires to the steering column horn connectors, with a green one at the horn, assume that should be active.
seriously thinking of going old school to a VK or so, no computers!

Green at the horn is +. It is fed from the horn relay in the underbonnet fuse box.

The yellow wire I'm talking about could well be a black one on cars without steering wheel audio controls (they have the yellow one) but it's location gives it away anyway - once the covers are off, look over the top of the wheel & you can't miss it - the wire is crimped into the back of the rubbing terminal.
It will only be a single wire.

The VR & VS BCMs are not interchangeable - they are quite different actually.

Speed alert runs off regular 12V power & earth, and the speed signal from the cluster - it's got nothing to do with the BCM. It also has a beeper in it that triggers on certain things like over-temp, so there's other connections between the speed alert & cluster, but they won't stop it working.
Most likely a poor connection in the plug behind it.
Cheers,

Mick

got the speedo out and partly dismantled.
however to get at the gears looks like I have to remove the front face .
does the needle just pull off, then remove the black screws?
anything I should look out for? (I know to wear cotton gloves and not to put marks on the black face as almost impossible to get looking good again.

thanks
