If you replace a V8 speedo with a V6 speedo will it read differently?

actually the tacho won't work at all. the trip meter and odometer on my VR were not working and I was offered a dash out of a V8 the tacho did not register at all, the same guy had a v6 dash put that in worked perfectly.

That's my problem, the odometer & trip stopped working. I've pulled a replacement dash to bits so that I just use the speedo. I believe this is a common problem.

you should have said so there is a little plastic gear in the speedo that breaks a tooth and then the odo and trip won't work. you can buy them off ebay for about 8 bucks and they are fiddly but easy to fit but took me about 5 attempts to get it to work as the gear seems to need to be aligned correctly, i was fitting it driving it no go unfit it refit it drive it eventually fluked the right way around and it works ok. The tacho will work. The difference between the V8 & V6 tacho is the placement of a resistor on the main circuit board - changes it from reading 4 pulses per revolution to 3 (or vice-versa).
I've got pics somewhere of where I changed one over.
The other cluster difference is the temp gauge - V8 & V6 are slightly different in their calibration - you can pick the V8 one by the translucent green paint on the end of the 2 pins that secure it.
The reason you may not have got the tacho to work is that there are variations in the dash pins in the 3 sockets across the models. You really need to be careful swapping clusters over. If it's not like-for-like, then the least that will happen is something won't work, but the worst case (between VN & VR, or vice-versa - I can't remember now) you'll let the smoke out. |

All electronics are - the trick is to make sure the smoke stays inside all the little components on the circuit board, and then it still works :) |
