Hi all I am new here and just have a quick question for you on my diff. now when I bought the car I was told that it had a salibury 10bolt with 4.11's and LSD so after driving car for a while it didn't have the feel of 4.11 so I counted the turns and it only about 3.7 that makes me think is it a 10 bolt or not.I was hoping there was some obvious markings for a 10bolt on the casing or something. I should mention to you that it's not fitted in to a holden its accually running in a escort with a 3lt v6 efi turbo with a 904 torque flight trans.

Take a photo of the rear cover and post up a link

Put them on a photo hosting site like photobucket and post up the link. If you do a search on this site there is a thread on it somewhere.

Munro,

You just need to count the bolts on the outer casing. In reference to the ratio, you need to take the outer casing off. On the main sun dial it should be stamped what the ratio is.

Bolts on the outer casing won't tell you anything.

I know it's not foolproof & there are exceptions, but I use the lid bolt count as a quick ID over the phone.

12 bolts = 12 bolt Chev
10 bolts = 10 bolt Chev or Holden Salisbury
9 bolts = BW 78

If the ratio is 3.7 & it has 9 bolts holding the lid, then it's probably a BW out of Nissan Skyline R31, a common conversion in small cars like Escorts.

Number of bolts is the bolts that hold the crownheel to the hemisphere, not the cover plate. Dr Terry's rule of thumb works in some instances (like if you have a 12 bolt). Won't help you tell Holden small and big Salisbury diffs apart or pick between them and Chev 10 bolt.

the only way to tell the ratio without taking the rear cover off or trusting a 35 year old yoke flange is to jack up one wheel and cound the 1/2 turns the tailshaft does.

3.5 half turns (180 Deg) of tailshaft it will be 3.55 etc
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

Correct, the number does refer to the number of crownwheel bolts, my example was just a quick ID method in case his was a BW.
