Why guess, check the casting date on the block and you will know for sure...

That'll tell you when it was cast, not when it was used in a car. Normally you are right and they are close, but sometimes out by months.

I was after a rough date as its in the hq coupe I bought in 1995 , it was factory 308 4 speed. So i knew the 253 was not there from factory. Thanks for all your info.

Agreed, As the original post was only trying to get an "era" for the motor I'm sure a month or two won't be an issue.
