Recently bought an EH with a reco'd 186 in it. Need to know what fuel to run in it.
Engine was done in 2001 but the place that did it shut down a few years ago, so can't call them. Previous owner didn't know, he had it in a shed for 2 years and didn't start it. Can't get in contact with the owner before that.
I don't know if the engine was set up for standard unleaded alone, will my mechanic be able tell me just from a visual inspection? If I use standard or premium unleaded, do i need to put in any additives?

I'm not a big fan of additives. Try a tank of 95 fuel and see if it pings. If it doesn't, you could try standard but I reckon it would ping with 91. Depending on the comp ratio you may have to use 98. Would it be a high mile car or just a weekend car? If it's just a weekend car I wouldn't be bothered with an additive as valve recession takes a good while to happen.
Another vague clue, on the top of the head on the manifold side you should be able to find an H or L cast into the head. This stands for high or low comp head. If it's an H you will need premium. If it's an L you may get away with standard. Depending on the head it will be towards the back or could be at the front.

If it is not modified much 91 will be fine. If it pings move up to 95 or 98. If it has the same fuel sitting in the tank for months, use 95 or 98. |

It'll be a weekend car, going to go on club permit. That said, it's a 500km round trip to the coast which is where I'd be heading with it.
How long are we talking before valve recession sets in?

500,000kms. Mate I wouldn't worry about it. I have been using the same 186 with original bore etc for over 15 years. I just use 95. No probs. 91 is no good Edited by user Wednesday, 22 February 2012 5:28:05 AM(UTC)

Its the lack of lead in the fuel that causes valve recession, not the octane rating. Octane rating causes pinging/detonation. Valve recession starts occurring as soon as the last traces of lead/additive disappear off the valves. It is a gradual thing though, and as a weekend warrior it will go for years. When it starts to play up, get the head reconditioned with hardened valve seats and the problem is gone.

Cheers everyone, won't worry about the lead replacement additives and will run it on 95. Time to get this thing moving!
