Looking for help in identifying what's wrong here. See the photo, damage/broken part is circled.

It's on the passenger side of the block, towards the rear. Fresh coolant is visible, looks like a part that screws in and that something's snapped off it.

Cheers all!

It's the Temperature Sensor , there should be a loose wire also hanging down around the back of the Engine .

Thanks for that. So apart from the sensor not working (and it's now on the list to repair), is this otherwise a problem? Eg. If I drive to the mechanics with it like this will it pump the cooling system dry?

That outlet is used for the heater hose connection.
In EH's, there is one of two options.
1/ A heater valve that was fitted to a short length of water pipe & controlled by a cable system from the dash heater control.
2/ A straight barbed fitting that the heater hose connects to & runs directly to the Warmaride 2 speed fan heater. This type of heater has the heater valve connected to the body of the heater under the dash.

This is the straight barbed fitting for the Warmaride heater.
These heaters were fitted to all Premiers & an option for Special & Standard models.
This image actually shows the barbed fitting fitted to a blue head, in a different outlet. Factory fitting was steel not brass.

This is the heater valve on the water pipe. (copied from an ebay advert)

The Hole will need to be pluged before you drive it , or you will pump all of your coolant out , you did say 186 ? then yes it would be the Temp: Sensor . 149/179 then the Heater Hose outlet .

Yeah 186. Can I plug it with a bolt with the same sized thread until I get a new sensor, or is this just a bad, bad idea?

Just be aware as utilityv8 has explained this could be used for either a heater outlet or as i have commented , the Idiot light sensor for the Thermostat so you will need to do a bit of investigation to see how your engine is set up . over time and different owners it could have been changed around to different set-ups . Look to see if you have a Thermostat anywhere else .

Not quite correct. HR 186 have their temp switch at the thermostat housing (the same as EH/HD), while HK/T/G 186 (& later engines) have their temp switch at that rear port of the cylinder head.

My guess is that someone has just fitted a head off a later 186 or 202 onto an EH. But whatever the reason it now needs a 1/2" NPT plug to stop the coolant leak.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Will check to make sure it's temp switch. If so, would this do the trick:

Actually I've just realised that the ebay one is a guage type sender. So I'd need switch type sender - can only seem to find them in 1/8" - with an adapter to make it 1.2"

Cheers for the help guys, has helped alot!
