Hey Guys I have a XB coupe and I have had people telling me the car smells of petrol, they can smell it inside to car when it is parked in the garage, also when we are driving down the highway and around town, my sence of smell is pretty bad and I don't know how extreme it is,I do get the odd wiff from time to time so I guess its there, but others say its not good!
I don't want to drive around with a canary in the car! and I cannot see any leaks of fuel anywhere, any ideas?

Hi Jim, the breather hoses look ok, but I will have a real close look again, the pertolcap has a crap seal and needs a new one, but this would not make an effect whilst driving, especially with the windows up, but I would like to know if I can get a detection unit that will sniff out the problem? for example a mate had a carbon monoxide filter just haging off his rear vision mirror in his Falcon, and over a period of time it changed colour, I feel like a idiot getting around the car sniffing every part and pannel.

Hi Paul, I will check the breather hose too, and I will get the the good petrol sniffers to check it out, I'll just make sure they don't have a smoke hanging out out their mouth aswell!

todays nasty additives in unleaded fuel will leach odour through the hoses, even "million dollar" speedflow stuff is not immune...

to be honest, i think its always going to be there in an older car, newer spec fuel hose doesnt react as bad to the fuel or get fumey, and "billion dollar" teflon lined hose is what the cool cats are doing.

phill if the hoses are good check to make sure you have a good seal where the tank bolts in and make sure none of those fuel tank bolts are loose. I had the same problem, turned out to be that and the wrong type of fuel cap. Some caps are vented, some aren't.

Hi Phill,
for starters crawl into the boot and let us know if you have a pollution fuel tank in the car. It will have little hose connectors sticking out of the top of the tank on the front passengers side. Then let us know if there is a small tube coming out of the filler neck. If there is there should be a rubber hose attacked to it that curls up under the rear parcel tray and then goes back down through a small hole where it vents out under the car. I can show you how to modify your GT cap to be a dummy cap and have a regular standard locking cap under it. I did that with my cap.

the hose from the filler neck should curl up under the parcel tray and then come back down into the car and through the floor next to the tank. If you aren't running the charcoal cannister block those other holes up coming out of the tank. I'd need to send you some photos of what I've done to the fuel cap. You still fill from the outside. I gutted the GT cap and put a regular locking cap on the car. The GT cap swings over it and covers it up so that it still looks standard. Some cars have vented or non vented caps depending on what sort of breather system is on the car. Oh and some of the aftermarket venting caps don't work like they should and you risk overpressuring the tank which means it will try and suck itself inside out.

Paul, Sorry I never got back earlier I have been sick as a dog past the last couple of days, and its not from sniffing petrol, so I'm not sure about the hose under the parcel shelf and I want to look into that, I will speak to a mate who has a coupe and see what its all about, I have a charcoal cannister but its not connected, but I would like to see some photo's, please,

Where did you get the cap from? my filler neck has two square notches taken out of it, so it would have to be for a cap that would have to be turned to lock and seal, where as the cap I have just swings and gets pressed on and then locks, also your cap swings right open where mine only goes about 90degrees, owell I don't think that really matters, but I must get the right cap to plug it in there, any ideas?
