Hey Guys I have a XB coupe and I have had people telling me the car smells of petrol, they can smell it inside to car when it is parked in the garage, also when we are driving down the highway and around town, my sence of smell is pretty bad and I don't know how extreme it is,I do get the odd wiff from time to time so I guess its there, but others say its not good!
I don't want to drive around with a canary in the car! and I cannot see any leaks of fuel anywhere, any ideas?
Cheers Phill.

My XE wagon used to do that. It got so bad I took to parking it in the garage with the windows open.

The cause was that the breather hoses had dried out and shrunk a little. The fix was as simple as tightening up all of the breather and filler hose clamps.

Hopefully yours will be as easy a fix.

Hi Jim, the breather hoses look ok, but I will have a real close look again, the pertolcap has a crap seal and needs a new one, but this would not make an effect whilst driving, especially with the windows up, but I would like to know if I can get a detection unit that will sniff out the problem? for example a mate had a carbon monoxide filter just haging off his rear vision mirror in his Falcon, and over a period of time it changed colour, I feel like a idiot getting around the car sniffing every part and pannel.
Cheers Phill.

Check your fuel lines and make sure your fuel tank is sealed well Phill. Also have a look and see if you have the breather hose running off the filler neck that snakes under the back parcel tray. Next time someone complains about the smell take them to the back of the car and pop the boot and get them to see if the smell is coming from there

Hi Paul, I will check the breather hose too, and I will get the the good petrol sniffers to check it out, I'll just make sure they don't have a smoke hanging out out their mouth aswell!
Cheers Phill.

A/C or fridge mechanics use an electronic sniffer that beeps when it detects gas. I reckon that one of those machines would sniff out petrol fumes just as effectively.

todays nasty additives in unleaded fuel will leach odour through the hoses, even "million dollar" speedflow stuff is not immune...

to be honest, i think its always going to be there in an older car, newer spec fuel hose doesnt react as bad to the fuel or get fumey, and "billion dollar" teflon lined hose is what the cool cats are doing.

Hi Greenhj,
I think your right, the smell will always be there, but I will have a very close look coming this weekend, but I have been in so many older cars and I think they do have that petrol smell about them, but to go down the path to get those hoses is big $$$,
Well I can always say it's a better smell than dried up cat piss on the back seat on a hot sunny day! Ha Ha.
Cheers Phill

phill if the hoses are good check to make sure you have a good seal where the tank bolts in and make sure none of those fuel tank bolts are loose. I had the same problem, turned out to be that and the wrong type of fuel cap. Some caps are vented, some aren't.

Hi Paul,
Ok, I'll put that on my list when I'm crawling around in and out of the boot area, the pertol cap is one of those push button flip caps and it is half stuffed, what I mean is that it dosen't seal propley and it doesen't lock propley, (well, fully stuffed) also when I have a full tank and go around a sharp right hand corner and it just flows out, I need a new cap but when i see a good one its top dollar, but if so well that may be the case, but I think there is a couple of different caps out there, Im not too sure what to purchace!how can I tell to get the right one?
Cheers Phill.

Hi Phill,
for starters crawl into the boot and let us know if you have a pollution fuel tank in the car. It will have little hose connectors sticking out of the top of the tank on the front passengers side. Then let us know if there is a small tube coming out of the filler neck. If there is there should be a rubber hose attacked to it that curls up under the rear parcel tray and then goes back down through a small hole where it vents out under the car. I can show you how to modify your GT cap to be a dummy cap and have a regular standard locking cap under it. I did that with my cap.

Hi Paul,
yeh it's a pollution tank and all the hoses coming out of it are about 600mm long then they all go into one hose and there it is blocked off, I think the smell is coming out of these hoses as some have cracks in them, also the filler neck has the hose coming out at the side and it goes into the tank adjacent to the filler neck, I'm not too sure about the hose that curls up under the rear parcel tray and travels under the car? sounds like I have a missing hose,
But I'm very intrested to to know what you did or how you went by with the modification to your cap, I'm only guessing you fill the car up through the inside of the boot?
Cheers Phill.

the hose from the filler neck should curl up under the parcel tray and then come back down into the car and through the floor next to the tank. If you aren't running the charcoal cannister block those other holes up coming out of the tank. I'd need to send you some photos of what I've done to the fuel cap. You still fill from the outside. I gutted the GT cap and put a regular locking cap on the car. The GT cap swings over it and covers it up so that it still looks standard. Some cars have vented or non vented caps depending on what sort of breather system is on the car. Oh and some of the aftermarket venting caps don't work like they should and you risk overpressuring the tank which means it will try and suck itself inside out.

Warning! Careful if you find / borrow an AC leak detector!
("A/C or fridge mechanics use an electronic sniffer that beeps when it detects gas. I reckon that one of those machines would sniff out petrol fumes just as effectively.")
My old detector actually produces a pulsed spark in the sensor tip, kind of like a barbecue lighter. definatly would spoil your day once it got close to any real fuel vapour.
Some times when I fill up the fuel odour is really off especially E10 type blends.

Hi Oily,
Thanks for the tip! I don't think I will be doing that, Cheers,

Paul, Sorry I never got back earlier I have been sick as a dog past the last couple of days, and its not from sniffing petrol, so I'm not sure about the hose under the parcel shelf and I want to look into that, I will speak to a mate who has a coupe and see what its all about, I have a charcoal cannister but its not connected, but I would like to see some photo's, please,
Cheers Phill.

Hi Paul, thanks for the pics you sent me, much appreciated,
I like the idea and I want to do the same,
Where did you get the cap from? my filler neck has two square notches taken out of it, so it would have to be for a cap that would have to be turned to lock and seal, where as the cap I have just swings and gets pressed on and then locks, also your cap swings right open where mine only goes about 90degrees, owell I don't think that really matters, but I must get the right cap to plug it in there, any ideas?
Cheers
Phill.

Hi Phill, all the filler necks have those notches. They are designed to fit the standard non locking twist cap and the locking caps.
http://www.ebay.com.au/i...ries&hash=item3a6f7c1cf0

That's pretty much the same cap that I used. I cut the chrome off with a pair of tin snips and pliers and what you saw in the photos is what I had left. I got a sneeky feeling the XD locking fuel caps will also fit without having to cut anything up. I'm just not 100% sure. If you go past a wreckers might pay to see if they have any wrecks with fuel caps you can check out to do some trial fitting. Someone once told me they got one off an XD wagon but that was a LOT of years ago and my memory is as about as reliable as a politicians promise these days.
