I was looking at something in HJ for some reason, and noticed something else that made me think.
Has anyone here ever taken any notice of or seen (or seen a photo) of how an Aussie M15 3spd is mounted on a South African HJ 8WM utility with optional 250ci 6cyl or 8WM sedan or 8WN wagon with 250HO 6cyl??
The box will probably be a 6cyl M15 as these have the same length input shaft as a Saginaw, and afaik the Chev 6cyl rear sits in the same place as a Holden 6cyl or Chev V8 (unlike the the Holden V8 which is 20-25mm or so shorter hence the longer input shaft on the aussie V8 boxes).
What I was wondering about is the bellhousing used. It'd have to be a special with Chev front and Aussie box??
Normally when odd boxes are used there is a belhousing available and they made it fit. Like the Saginaw 3spd on the LHD LH Torana, these had a HK-HT 6cyl 4spd commercial bellhousing and used a hydraulic clutch. LX with Super T10 used a HT-HG 253/308 4spd bellhousing.
So just wondering... Just looked a bit further at it, and couldn't be bothered changing the text above. The 250ci engine also had an M22 in the tonner, and the 250HO had an M20 option on the 8WN sedan (standard with TH350) so both of these would have used the same bellhousing.
Note: i've used the luxury level designations above, but for interest sake the cars are called Kommando for the 8WM sedan and 8WN wagon, Kommando LS for the 8WN sedan, El Camino for the 8WN ute and Chevrolet for the tonner. The same engine/box relation exists in HX as well. |

Hi Byron.
AFAIK, they did the same with the Tri-Matic. In some mid-70s SA Chevrolets they used a 4-cyl which was a cut down version of the Chev 6 (a la Starfire), so they needed a bellhousing to go from Tri-Matic to Chev, another one unique to Sth Africa.
Also I believe that the locally produced HQ & HJ in SA were known as AQ & AJ respectively, but I didn't know there was an HX (or AX) series.

I bought a one tonner recently that I got the 253 and 3 speed box out of it before I sold the remainder to a forum member on here.
It is 3 on the floor. Unsure if this is the bellhousing you are talking about.
I am actually wanting to put my Aussie 4 speed box from my 202 behind the 253. I need to find a bellhousing to suit. I think that is all I need to do.

Terry, they are listed in the HX features manual. Whether or not they were actually built?
David, that bellhousing you are talking about is a standard HT-mid HZ Holden V8 to aussie 3 or 4 speed. The floor shift would have been added at some stage. It is the same bellhousing you need to put the aussie 4spd behind your 253, but you have to modify the 6cyl 4spd first by putting a V8 input shaft and front cover on it.
