Does anyone know what the actual difference is between a 186S engine and the 186H? |

There was no 186H prefix.
For HR there was 186A (regular issue hi-comp) & 186K (X2 or S).
For HK/T/G there was 186P (regular issue hi-comp), 186S (S motor) & 186L (lo-comp).
The only difference between the hi-comp & lo-comp motors was the lo-comp's dished pistons.
The main differences between the S motors & the lesser versions were external, i.e. the dual outlet exhaust headers & the dual barrel carby & inlet manifold. There were minor internal differences like valve springs & cam profile (very mild) as well as uprated bearing materials.
The other 186 was the 186X/3100X/CK for the LC GTR XU-1, a very different animal entirely.

G'day Dr Terry, I was looking at the Holdenpaedia website and they have a Red 186 Identification Chart which shows for the HT & HG two engine prefix's, 186H and 186S. I have attached the link below. http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/186 |

Unfortunately that is not right, HT 186 are 186P, 186S and 186L.
Maybe the confusion with the 186L being low comp so H for high comp.

Hey Dr Terry,
are you able to contact Holdenpaedia and give them the correct information, so that they can update their site? That way others that visit the site are getting the correct information.

Maybe someone at holdenpedia could purchase a copy of my book which has all of the above mentioned codes listed model by model. To my knowledge it is the most complete & correct listing in printed media. Does anyone on here have any corrections or addition to my book in this area ? Dr Terry |

Not exactly. It goes like this. ALL Holden Red motors from EH intro to around April 1967 had forged steel crankshafts. This includesy all 149, 161, 179 & 186 of all versions up to that date. From then onwards, only 186X2, 186S & LC GTR XU-1s got the forged crank. All other Holden engines got the new cast nodular iron crankshaft. I'm not sure about the LC GTR 161S & 173S , Byron ?? The forged steel crank is tougher or ultimately stronger than the nodular cast item, but in practice the nodular crank has served very well over the years. You don't hear of too many Holden red cranks breaking. In fact the 1972 Bathurst winner (P Brock Esq, LJ GTR XU-1) had a cast iron crank. Holden didn't produce a longer stroke (202) version of the forged crank. Unless you're building a blown killer street machine or a serious racecar, the cast nodular crank is perfectly OK. Dr Terry |
