Got home today after a 35 km drive to find coolant pissing out from underneath car and bulk steam from under bonnet. No warning re: overheating was received via system - was just wondering whether this could have adversely affected my motor in any way and what is a likely cause? (split hose etc.) Refilled radiator which was totally empty and noticed steady stream of water started trickling out from underneath - am slightly annoyed as car has just been serviced (150k)so if there was an issue with hoses should have been identified at the dealership?

I can't comment on the cause, but one thing I do know, any temp sender has to be in fluid to work. It won't work if the system is empty or full of steam. I presume late model cars have a temp input into the computer, if there is no fluid in the system it won't send an irregular reading.
Colin.
PS: happy to be proven wrong.

Should have been identified at the Dealership, You Are Kidding, You dont go there, You search and find a suitable workshop, Clean tidy place and usually a respected, reliable, Owner operator, with knowledgeable staff, A quick look at there appearance should tell you enough, I could not leave my 40 or 50 grand loved 1 just any where that had a manufactures sign on there dealership, Even then a mechanic cant tell when a hose or a heater tap is about to explode,

No one can see when a hose clamp is about to break or a hose is about to split or a rock goes through a radiator for crying out loud. However there is no way I can see where the hole is from here so who knows. Didn't you notice the coolant smell in the cab? The temp gauge actually goes down as the coolant leaks away from the sender. What you need is a low level indicator. Did they do a coolant change or some sort of cooling system service at the dealer? That may lead to a coolant loss possibly. Maybe if you got under the car and found where the leak was it would be possible to have an idea as to the cause.

Apparently it was my water pump that was cactus had this replaced for a total cost of $750 ($290 of this was for labour) - is this an excessive amount for the parts and repair? It gets better since picking her up from the dealership there is a godawful noise coming from the motor that wasn't there before - bloke reckons that coolant may have leaked onto the pulleys but I'm sceptical it sounds more like something is loose and is vibrating - can anyone recommend a reputable mechanic in Perth as I have had a gutful of being shafted by these jokers.

I think you do have to cut the dealership some slack on the failure of the pump, not many can predict that. Also water pumps often do not leak when car is parked, they leak much more when the motor is running.
Having said that, I hope your car is a VZ V8, because that price is ridiculous for a V6. An Alloytec V6 water pump is probably the easiest pump to replace on any car on the market & this includes HQ V8s & Grey motors.
The noise could be coolant on the belt or just a noisy belt. A pulley bearing is also a possibility so get a second opinion.

As Dr Terry says, could be the belt. I 've some horrible noises from belts over the years. Some of them you'd swear that the alternator/water pump had gravel in the bearings.
Is it possible to cleant the belt- or use something on it. Used to be something called "Belt Dressing" arround in the old V belt days.

Thanks for your replies Dr Terry and P350 yeah she is a VZ V8 so good to know I haven't been overly stung with the repair. I'm hoping it is just an issue with the belt but am curious to know how involved is it to fix the pulley bearing if this is the problem and maybe an approximate cost prior to taking her in tomorrow?

i did this job yesterday on a vy ss, i charged $750 for a new pump two new belts and four new idler pulleys, owner supplied coolant, some of the pulley were not available seperatly through holden and were quite expensive, i uded precision pulleys and that included two hours labour.
