If you stick a label on your own car and the rego is not paid then it's you who gets done for fraud.

If your boss sticks a rego label on a car without paying said rego and you get pulled over for no rego then you have a very good argument for not knowing that the car was unregistered and your boss would very likely cop a fraud charge.

I agree with what Mick says about fleet vehicles. We have our groceries delivered by a national supermarket chain. A few weeks ago a driver turned up without plates on his truck. He had just been booked unregistered and in NSW the cops remove the plates on the spot when they catch someone.

The cop strangely enough told the driver that he could finish his run. The driver said that he would pass the fines on to his employer to pay.

We have not seen that driver since so I'm guessing that he did not get his money back from his employer.

That would be a fleet management failing rather than a refusal to pay rego.

Same thing with the rep I know who got done - he contested it, and the magistrate ruled he was negligent, as he should have checked the label (which admittedly did show the car was out of reg).

The only difference to the situation is that when they took the plates off the car, they told him he couldn't drive it.

For half an hour he stayed with the car, making phone calls to try to get it sorted. The same cops went past regularly, making sure he didn't try to take off in it. He was 4 hours from home, on a country trip.
Cheers,

Mick

Perhaps they should get rid of number plates as well. Replace them with barcodes.......

Hahaha. I would like to see no number plates actually.

Its a bad idea. Here in SA i hear of drivers being caught out all the time now for having an unreg vehicle.

As far as your OWN car goes, what is the deal with some people.

They send you the papers and you fix your rego, same as it always was, WTF has the sticker ever had to do with remembering to renew your rego?

If people can't pay rego, it is scary to think how little they concentrate on driving on the road.

Wow this is a hot subject over a little bit of sticky plastic, I have lived in the ACT, NSW and now QLD. I have taught one family member to drive in each state, I lived in Canberra when you had to pit your car every year! When I left NSW you still had to have a yearly inspection by an authorized inspector. QLD is one inspection and thats it until the car falls apart !

Off the subject a bit, I like the idea of a car being inspected every year by an authorized inspector as they can pick up on something you have missed, what qualifications does a cop or parking inspector have to do these checks?

As for the label....I like the label it simply gives me a small sense of security, most have year make and model on them as well as VIN number and an expiration date for rego. In the case of an MVA its quick and simple to grab the info off that, as it is to get the info from a drivers licence and yes I know both of these can be faked but its rare.

Number plate scanning has been in for ages, they have random patrols driving around car parks just scanning number plates looking for stolen or defected or unregistered cars, most highway traffic cameras or toll cameras do this as well.

As far as rules and regulations go that has been a big problem for ages but you need to remember that the ACT and Northern TERRITORY are that.... TERRITORY's and they have a totally different set of rules to any given STATE..........

Last I heard NSW had introduced a law that required you to get an engineers certificate just to replace the springs in your car now (7 news about 4 year ago) has it been in forced??

QLD RWC requires every thing to be factory standard, if a child restraint is fitted a mod plate is fitted if the restraint is removed a mod plate is fitted. The best I have seen is a Mack truck with 27 mod plates attached to the side of it, all for minor modifications that are accepted mods in other states......

So yes we can go on and on bu at the end of the day we know 2 things .... 1 yes its revenue and 2 yes they are slowly forcing us off the road as resources are becoming scarce.......

On 2 seperate occasions RTA NSW has failed to send out the rego renewal papers to us, so if it hadn't been for the sticker in the front screen reminding me it was nearly due, then we may have had a nice reminder thanks to a cop.

and to this RTA states it's the owners/drivers responsablity to ensure the vehicle is rego'ed, even if they forget to send out the paper work!!

I think that this is the crux of the problem. Owning as many cars as I do, this has happened to me so often I've lost count.
