Can anyone tell me when the HQ changed from a magnetic setup to a thermal one for the Feul sender unit. The one in my coupe is stuffed and I need to change it, it's a 5 / 73 guage with no red markings on the front for empty only white. Also as I'm thinking of putting a factory air con in it later can I put one for that in now or will it stuff up without the air.

I was told about 1975, I found out when I put a hz dash in the hq but kept the hq sender , it was going from empty to full. Cheers

Unfortunately Jason, the changeover time was mid '73, so your gauge could be of either type.

The easiest method of finding out which type you have is to disconnect the wire at the tank sender & substitute it with a 10 ohm resistor. When you switch the ignition on, if the gauge goes to almost full scale you have a thermal set-up. If the gauge struggles to get to about 25-30% scale then it's an early magnetic type. DO NOT short the sender wire to earth!! If you do, then you could cause permanent damage, if it's a thermal unit.

Your query regarding air cond is a strange one. The only time this comes into play is if your car has factory air on a 308 or 350. The only item extra is the added return pipe at the tank sender, this can be added if you need one or blocked off, if you have one & it's not required. The dash gauge is unaffected.

I have seen the sender with the extra return pipe and this is what I'm asking about. I have already earthed the wire as it tells you to in the Holden workshop manual to tell if the problem is the guage or sender so I'll just have to hope it's still ok. I've been told you can tell by the face being all white (thermal) or red at empty (magnetic) but have no way to comfirm this, hence the question here. Where can I get a 10 ohm resistor as I would like to try this.

When Holden printed that advice in the manual it only applied to the magnetic type.

What did the gauge do when you shorted it to ground ? If it was the magnetic type it would read close to empty. If it was the thermal type it would have gone full scale very quickly.

The actual date of change varied, depending on plant. Brisbane was earliest, around 24/8/73, then Sydney and Adelaide both around 10/9/73 and Melbourne around 21/9/73.

Since I've had my HQ the fuel guage hasn't worked, I tested it by the manual which says the sender is faulty. My guage is a 5/73 build which I'm told is right on the changeover time so it could be thermal or magnetic. Rarespares think it's thermal so I got a thermal sender brought it home put the wire on it and tried to test it out of the tank. It went straight to full no matter what I did with the float, so I tried the old one same thing. Is this because I'm trying to test it out of the car? Do I need to earth it somehow? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to have to drain the tank again and once the new sender is in I can't take it back if it's the wrong one.

This is the same with most mid-model running changes, that's why the various catalogues just loosely sat mid-'73.

Ok so finally got it going out of tank by using a jumper lead to earth it via the ring that seats in the tank. And of coarse I had the wrong bloody one so back to Rarespares for a magnetic one which has to be ordered anyway at least I know now.
