I remember removing and throwing the carbon canister out of my late 74 HQ Monaro a few decades ago and I'd like to find the correct one to re-install. I guess its the same as the first HJ canisters.

The car definately had one there from factory and the other teltale sign is that this monaro only had one horn, theres no space for the dual horn setup when the canister is installed. Also no second set of green wires for the second horn.

So far I've narrowed it down to two Rochester part numbers, 7043715 or 7028131 . . not sure.

The Rochester 7028131 has two connections, TANK and CARB
The Rochester 7043715 has three connections TANK, PURGE and CARB

Theres no breather line from the fuel tank on this car and I vaguely remember the TANK connection being capped off on the old canister. My guess is the Rochester 7043715 canister with three connections is probably the correct one for me.

Any HJ owners out there with a canister? . . . whats your part number?

Thanks

I thought early HJ didnt have a canister and it was introduced mid-run. On V8's the HQ/HJ early air filter has the hose from the rocker cover attachment at the front.

The late HQ canister will be the same as the 1975 HJ ones. It is a 4 port canister with the round bit on top. 308 has one outlet plugged.

Having said that, there is no point having the canister if the car does not have a sealed tank and a vapour line.

If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords?

Yeah its a strange one but it was there when I bought the car 23 years ago.
Must have been a trial run or something?
I think the only purpose this canister served was to absorb or recirculate the vapors from the idle-vent and hot-soak vent on the carby.

A HQ only has a use for 1 port, I dont know why it would have had a 4 port canister. I reckon it was either a two or three port thing from memory.

You're right they didnt officially, and yet a few HQ's had them and probably a few HJ's too. Maybe just a trial run.
