The car has had a repaired rear quarter and they had bogged over bare metal. It looked like it had absorbed a little water and just stained the bare metal under it? This is the main reason I am asking. Don't want to do hours of work for a poor result!!! Thanks

An epoxy primer should be used on the bare metal CORRECTLY mixed and applied as per the Technical Data Sheet for the product being used. To many people dont read instructions.

For example

The above link says the etch primer IS NOT TO BE USED UNDER FILLER.

This link is the data sheet for epoxy primer, and it is the product to be used under filler.

http://www.protec.com.au...file.asp?fileid=1003656

This is only one example. I work on restoration and rectification of the incorrect application of paint products on a regular basis.

That's good to know but can this be used under acrylic paint-old school paint! If not what else can I use? Am going to paint this car in a clear over base but have don acrylic paint jobs on my other old car. These have not been bare metal resprays. Thanks

This is a layer example.

Metal, etch, epoxy, filler, epoxy, two pak Hi-fill primer, acrylic base colour, acrylic clear.

Anything else I would not guarantee.

So would you put etch under epoxy primer? I use epoxy primer only, no etch. Also when you mix Part A and B should you mix these together prior to adding thinners or just add thinners and mix altogether? Cheers.

A one sentence explaination that has just cleared up years of confusion for me ...

If you're using two pack throughout the job does anything change in this example? Also if you have minor (or even major) panel work to do is this done after etch?

Cheers

Metal, etch, epoxy, filler, epoxy, two pak Hi-fill primer, topcoat colour (acrylic or two pack)

A few points.
filler should not be put on metal
filler cannot touch etch primer
epoxy primer can touch metal, filler or two pack primer, but cannot touch acrylic

Read the Technical Data Sheet links I posted above, and know that you must follow those sheets for that brand product to eliminate failure of products due to placing the wrong products on the wrong substrates. All manufacturers should have the sheets available for their products.

The restorations we do at our work are all thin etch primed as soon as they are bare metal. Then all panel beating is done. Minor and major. The very thin coating is not a problem when working on the panels.

Then after it is finished, the car is bare metal again and re- etch primed and epoxy primed. Any minor filler can then be done on the epoxy.

On the mixing instructions for that product (Epotec) it says to let it sit after mixing. I am just going by that products instructions. I always read the data sheets for every product I use.

Agree, this is a great sentence. Certainly makes things clearer.

Can i ask; you mention epoxy on either side of the filler.. is this the same product? Effectively sealing the filler on both sides?

Also ill be doin my torana over the summer, but wont be taking it back to bare metal in most areas as it still has the original paint underneath and is in good nick in most bits. Ill follow what you said above for the metal areas, but what is the best treatment over old paint? Its acrylic, and i was just going to sand it down to the original acrylic. Do you bother etch priming over that, of just go straight to 2pack hi fill, then acrylic again?

Cheers.

The epoxy will seal the filler from both sides yes

Unfortunately any acrylic underneath will always be the weak point in the product layer.

Peter I use Epotec 408 epoxy (based upon advice from the paint shop) but see your link is to Epotec AP-4110. Have you used the 408 and if so what was your experience? Thanks.
