HK rear spring to axle housing mount bolts.

My HK has factory fitted bolts holding the rear axle housing to the springs. I was told that back in the day GMH did a recall and fitted U bolts in lieu of the original bolts, dunno how though unless they changed the mounting plates as well, if so my car missed the recall and my GMH workshop manual and parts book both show bolts only, but they are early editions. My question's are... Can I use bolts with lowering blocks? Are bolts safe? Because I have the proof in my manuals as to production fitment I would be happy to go with bolts on reset springs, but I have these lowering blocks lying around. Thank's in advance. If its any help I have a early build 3rd month 68 HK and a late build 5th month 71 HG here, and both have bolts. Too get u bolts over housing it looks like you would have to bend brake lines out for u bolts to pass over diff housing. |

Also when you buy lowering blocks they usually come with u bolts which line up with original holes. |

I wish, the axle housing is larger than the hole spacing on the mount plates, you are supposed to pull the brake lines out and slip the U bolts in between then you would have to bend the U bolts both ways to get them in.

Bit strange that the housing is a bigger diameter then the hole spacing, I have used lowering blocks with u bolts in the past with no great hassles. You will get a better result if you go your other option and get the springs re-set and re-tempered. Looks and rides better. |

Just had a thought which may be or may not be a silly question. It hasn't got a bigger differential in it ie, 9 inch ford? |

Never seen U bolts from factory. If you install lowering blocks U bolts are fitted/supplied/recommended. The yellow cover HK parts catalogue says one size bolt fits all regardless of diff or leaf quantity in springs |

Strangely enough, 9-inch Ford axle tubes are slightly smaller than standard Holden. I've fitted several XW-XY type Ford rear assemblies to early Holdens (EH/HD/HR etc.) & they were all around 1/8-inch smaller in diameter. Dr Terry |

You would be forgiven for thinking that I should know more about this subject, but I don't remember what I did this morning let alone back in the day, lol.
For mine it would require a lot of faith in 44 year old welds to use bolts, so either way, lowering blocks or reset springs it will be the U bolts being massaged into place and with the holes in the plates being half a hole too far inboard whoever wants them back out will have to BYO angle grinder.
For info my yellow HK parts book (M36640) has a hand written addendum at 7.518 quoting part number 181669 (1 3/8" X 7/16") which is a 1/8" longer bolt, maybe some people installed penny washers as well?

regardless of what th parts book says, there is 3 different length factory fitted bolts; sedan 38mm (no shank), wagon 43mm (5mm shank), & ute/van 48mm (9mm shank) & 3 different thickness spacers; 1.5mm, 4.5mm, & 11mm regards DD www.bellarineclassicautos.com.au

I know, I was only stirring. I never realised until he mentioned it so we investigated. Definitely contradictory to the parts cataloges. |
