186S was optional across the HK range so it is entirely possible. There are 4 x gearboxes possible as well: 3spd crash (hydraulic clutch), 3spd all synchro (mechanical clutch), powerglide (colun shift only) or Saginaw M22 (stick shift). Unfortunately it won't be easy to pick if it was originally a 186S.

So does this mean that there are no codes on the id tags to verify this?

If its got its original books you could verify. Not sure about HK's, but HR's when ordered with 186S, were fitted with a limited slip diff and full instrument dash.

Not 100% correct.

Yes, all 186-S HRs got the full instrument dash as standard, but the LSD was not part of the package. An LSD was a separate option available for any HR & not standard on any particular version.

Likewise the instruments, while they were standard with the 186-S engine (X2 as well) they could be optioned (or fitted by the dealer as an accessory) on any HR. Meaning that their presence does not guarantee that the car was a genuine 186-S.

To my knowledge no other options came standard with a 186-S in HK/T/G.

As you said in your opening sentence, original books or purchase papers would be the only real proof that the car was a genuine 186-S

I'veonly ever seen one example, a HK van. It was a 4spd (M22), and had the sports instruments. It was white with bucket seats (I think it had buckets). It ended up in a demo derby though, I missed the car by 10 minutes out of the local paper for $250. This is back in the early 90's.

Terry, regarding HR's with 186s option. I have owned a couple of these over the years and all I owned, were factory fitted with LSD. Its the 1st I have heard it not being part of the 186S package. I suppose if your right then a high percentage were optioned with both the 186S together with the LSD. Had a X2, and this was not fitted with a LSD as part of the X2 package.

Another clue to 186s is the auto choke. There is a blanking cap over the position on dash cluster were the manual choke is located and no script saying choke on same.

HGV8 is correct, no version of the 186-S had a manual choke, they were all auto-choke. That's a good method of auto-choke ID, the choke blank & panel with no lettering are quite rare.

Just on a side note - did a late HG van, with a 173/202, ever come out with 186s headers, as factory or dealer fitted?

Definitely not at the factory. Engines always left the engine plant complete & were not 'fiddled with' at the various assembly plants.

Of course dealers were sometimes well known for 'enhancing' cars at buyers request.
