How can you tell if an early 81837 HQ couple (dandenong built) was a manual or auto?
The body plate dosent help so I'm wondering how you know for sure without actually looking at the car.
Late HQ's have all the info on the body tag but early ones dont.

Adr plate will have ADR 9 if its an auto

Thanks Mr J, ditto from me. Since it's to do with auto trans, it could be used to tell if virtually any car sold in Aus was an auto & manual. Private imports excepted.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't believe that ADR9 came in until 1/1/72, for the BHQ chassis number series.

This being the case it may not identify an 'early' HQ, as being auto or manual.

I have a set of ID plates here in front of me off a 6/71 Pagewood HQ Deville, BODY number way less than 200 and chassis number just over 1000. It was actually an L30 M41 car. It has ADR9 on the Safety Compliance (or ADR) plate.

Seeing as Holden chassis numbers started at 1001, it must be pretty early.

I have seen an EH Holden chassis EH1021M. Seeing as they built more than 120 cars a day per assembly plant, it must have come off the line in the first few hours so to speak.

They started at AHQ00001 for S, A, B and P. The first 20 M numbers were reserved for non-regular production vehicles

This shows that the more you look into these cars the more things don't add up. All HQ 81837s I have looked at and know of from many years of looking at them have nothing consistent. There are errors in the Model Numbering and ADR numbers so you can't really be sure unless you look further into it and that means the body of the car.

The very first HQ 81837 is a well known car and was an auto with 9 on the ADR plate with a 5/71 build date. But it also has a 6 for the seating capacity so you can see that even this very first car had errors. But in the main, the 9 is for an automatic car and no 9 is for a manual.

The most effective way is to contact the Monaro guru Ben Stewart and he will confirm the build status of the 81837 regardless of how it appears today and what the ADR plate says. Of course this assumes that the ADR plate belongs to the car in question in the first place.
